IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I completely agree that music is a good way of bringing people from different cultures and age groups together. I believe that music can help people understand each other better and create stronger relationships.

First of all, music can bring people from different cultures closer together. People can learn about other cultures through their songs, instruments and traditional music. Even when people do not speak the same language, they can enjoy the same music and take part in musical activities together. For example, people from different countries often attend international music festivals and enjoy performances from different cultures. This can help them learn about each other's traditions and develop respect for one another.

Secondly, music can also connect people of different ages. Older and younger people may have different interests, but music can give them something to share. For example, parents can listen to traditional songs with their children, while young people can introduce modern music to older family members. By sharing their favourite music, they can spend more time together and understand each other's interests. This can improve relationships between different generations.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is an effective way to bring people together. It can help people understand different cultures and can also reduce the gap between younger and older generations. Therefore, music can play an important role in creating stronger relationships in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas regarding cultural exchange and intergenerational bonding are relevant and supported by examples, such as international music festivals and family music sharing. However, the response is 21 words short of the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the depth of development, as the arguments remain somewhat superficial and lack the necessary elaboration to fully explore the topic. To reach a higher band, you must expand your supporting points with more detailed analysis or additional examples to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to signal the structure. However, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases, and ensure that referencing between sentences is more sophisticated to improve the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication of your ideas. You use some topic-specific terms like 'traditional music', 'musical activities', and 'intergenerational'. However, the range of vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. There is a reliance on common words, and you do not demonstrate an ability to use less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions. To improve, focus on incorporating more precise synonyms and academic collocations to elevate the tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a good level of grammatical control. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your meaning is always clear. However, the range of complex structures is limited; you rely heavily on standard 'subject-verb-object' patterns. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences, passive voice, or relative clauses, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
