Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people think that an effective way of bringing people together from different traditions and ages is music. I completely agree with this view, because music is enjoyed by everyone regardless of their ages and it increases cultural appreciation.

One of the significant reasons of music's ability to bring people together is the widespread enjoyment experienced by different age groups. Everyone listens to music, whether it from their own culture or from another. As a result, a large number of people learn about new cultures and get influenced to know more about it, bringing everyone together. For example, many elderly people from different cultures enjoy listening to K-pop these days because of the inclusivity it offers and thus it increases more audience beyond borders, influencing cultural bonding.

Additionally, music from different cultures and traditions influences cultural appreciation. The internet has made access to a wide range of music from other entertainment industries very convenient and so anybody can listen to the viral tracks, learn about the singer or producer and finally get interested in their culture. As a result, people start appreciating their culture as well. In the last decade, for instance, k-pop industry has significantly attracted a huge number of global attention with the help of global bands like BTS and Blackpink. Moreover, not only they appreciate the music but also they show interest in their attire, food and history. Consequently, the number of tourists visiting South Korea increased exponentially. Hence, the music has brought these people closer to a completely new culture they did not even know about even ten years ago.

In conclusion, I firmly agree that music has the potential to bring different cultures and people of ages much closer and it is evident because it highly appreciates others traditions and is enjoyed by every age group.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of K-pop and its impact on cultural tourism. While the arguments are logical, some points could be developed with more depth to reach a higher band. For instance, the connection between music and 'age' is mentioned but not as thoroughly explored as the cultural aspect. Overall, the response is well-focused and provides a clear, consistent argument that satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Additionally', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel, but the overall structure is clear and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some flexibility. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'cultural appreciation', 'inclusivity', and 'exponentially'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'get influenced to know more about it' or 'attracted a huge number of global attention', which should be 'attracted a huge amount of global attention'. However, these errors do not impede communication. The range of vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly, and the student demonstrates a good grasp of relevant terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a reasonable level of accuracy, though some grammatical slips occur, such as 'whether it from their own culture' (missing verb 'is') and 'not only they appreciate the music but also they show interest' (incorrect word order for 'not only... but also'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout. The student shows an ability to use complex structures, and the punctuation is generally correct. The errors are not frequent enough to cause difficulty for the reader.
