Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely accepted that, music has the power to unite and connect people regardless of having different cultural backgrounds and ages. I completely agree with this viewpoint due to many reasons which are discussed in the upcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, music can reach across cultural and national boundaries and bring people together. The best example of this is, Live aid concerts that took place in the 1980s which were broadcast to global audience. In addition, two live events were held simultaneously in the UK and the US, and the main objective was to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The concerts were a huge success, in terms of numbers of people around the globe who watch them and their impact on international public awareness of famine. Therefore, the music is the truly planet global language.

Moreover, music has the ability to connect people from different generations. Regardless of age, we can enjoy music who has a memorable melody, a strong rhythm, and a singing beautiful voice, and the best songs seems to have the same magical effect on all of us. This can tell us why music competitions such as 'The voice' are such popular prime-time shows. This programmes can attract a tremendous number of audience because singing and popular songs can appeal children, parents and, grandparents in a positive way. As a result, there is no other form of entertainment can bring families together in such a way.

In conclusion, I believe that music has capability to pose a shared experiences between people, regardless of culture and age.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The arguments regarding cultural unity through global events like Live Aid and generational connection through music competitions are relevant and well-supported with examples. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, the conclusion could be more robust, as it currently feels slightly abrupt. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the prompt with a clear, consistent argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and ideas progress logically. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'As a result' are used to link ideas effectively. However, there are some minor mechanical issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the final sentence of the second paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is easy to follow, demonstrating a clear progression of thought throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for the expression of ideas with reasonable precision. There are some good collocations, such as 'cultural and national boundaries' and 'prime-time shows'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'the music is the truly planet global language' (should be 'truly global language') and 'pose a shared experiences' (should be 'foster shared experiences'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands, and some word choices are slightly unnatural or imprecise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'music has the power to unite... regardless of having different cultural backgrounds' (should be 'regardless of their different cultural backgrounds'), 'who watch them' (should be 'who watched them'), and 'this programmes' (should be 'these programmes'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score in this criterion.
