Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modernity, a considerable proportion of individuals believe that music is a effective way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. In my estimation, I firmly agree with this notion that music is a universal language that can bring people together and help them to understand different cultures and my opinion will be discussed in further paragraphs.

Supporting my agreement to the given statement, I partly believe that music can bring people from different cultural backgrounds together. Although, individuals around the world speak different language, melody and they can experience similar emotions through songs. They also enjoy different cultures and songs in different languages even without understanding all of its lyrics. For instance, a person from Kashmir sings Kashmiri songs, the people from China sings a Chinese songs and a significant no. of people enjoy different music taste from different cultures and in different languages. Moreover, international concerts and festivals can also bring people from diverse cultures together and allow them to share the same experience. Therefore, music plays a significant role in reducing culture barriers and promoting mutual understanding among people.

Conversely, it is true that music is an efficient way to connect people from different age groups. While a young generation usually prefer modern songs, old generation may enjoy traditional and classic songs. For example, parents can share their old songs with children while young people share modern music to their parents and grandparents. As a consequence, music can create opportunities for different generations to understand each other.

In conclusion, I believe that the mentioned points are firmly supporting my point of view that music can bring people together from diverse cultures and languages. It can also allow them to share the same experience in international concerts and festivals. Young and old generations can share their own music tastes with each other that bring the different age groups together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both cultural and generational aspects of music. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of international concerts and the exchange of music between parents and children. However, some points could be developed further; for instance, the explanation of how music bridges cultural barriers is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are fully integrated into your arguments rather than just listed. Overall, you have provided a solid response that directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Conversely', and 'As a consequence' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the mentioned points' in the conclusion, which is a bit redundant. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main themes of culture and age. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices to make the flow between sentences feel more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'universal language', 'diverse cultural backgrounds', and 'mutual understanding'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'a effective way' (should be 'an effective') and 'significant no. of people' (abbreviations should be avoided in formal writing). You also use 'modernity' in a slightly unnatural way at the start. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is sometimes lacking. Focusing on correct collocations and avoiding informal abbreviations will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a effective way', 'speak different language' (should be plural), and 'people from China sings' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, the sentence 'Although, individuals around the world speak different language, melody and they can experience similar emotions' is structurally awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
