IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is being argued that the music unites the people from distinct cultures and ages. I completely agree with this opinion. This essay will provide the reasons with relevant examples before presenting my own opinion.
One factor why a few people think that music unifies all the people is beacuse, they think that music can be a form of communication and when it is expressed properly it holds the power to change emotions. Moreover, different types of emotions can be expressed with the help of music. For instance, if a person holds the grudge towards his friend, then emotional songs can be an effective solution. As a result, this will not only provide mental peace but also help them in getting closer. This shows that songs do have a mental healing power.
Another factor is that, music provides a sense of peace of mind for a few. This means whenever a person has a mental breakdown, right music can be an answer to this. For example, whenever a family looses someone they love the most, they tend to grief profusely. Furthermore, connecting them to good music can help to cope up with the loss and thereby can help them in achieving some peace, which is crucial for their mental health.
Therefore, we can assume that the music plays an important role in bringing together the people of distinct ages and cultures. Although some people will disagree with this opinion, I strongly believe that music hold the power to reunite and allow people to get together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether music brings people of different cultures and ages together, presenting a clear overall position of complete agreement. The writer attempts to support this with arguments about emotional expression and mental health. However, the connection back to the core elements of the prompt—specifically bridging different cultures and age groups—is underdeveloped. The arguments instead focus generally on emotional healing and personal relationships rather than exploring the stated intercultural and intergenerational dimensions. For example, the instance of a person holding a grudge against a friend or a family dealing with grief does not explicitly demonstrate how music bridges age gaps or cultural divides. Consequently, the ideas remain somewhat limited and generalised, aligning best with a Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptor profile, where the task is addressed but certain key aspects are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a recognizable overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, making it coherent overall. Paragraphing is used to separate main ideas. However, paragraphing and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly handled. For instance, the transition 'Another factor is that, music provides...' features intrusive punctuation, and phrases like 'This means whenever...' or 'Furthermore...' are repetitive and predictable. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally strained; the second paragraph moves abruptly from general communication to a specific personal example about grudges without a smooth conceptual bridge. While the essay is readable and follows a logical sequence, the over-reliance on basic organizational formulas keeps it firmly at a Band 6.0 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, with terms like 'mental peace,' 'emotional songs,' 'grief profusely,' and 'mental health.' However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations that detract from precision. For instance, writing 'beacuse' (spelling error) and using phrases such as 'hold the grudge' (missing article 'a'), 'looses' instead of 'loses,' and 'cope up with' (redundant preposition) show limitations in word choice and phrasing. Attempts at less common vocabulary are present, but errors in spelling and collocation occasionally interrupt the flow. The vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, corresponding to a Band 5.5 or 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The text contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures (e.g., 'if a person holds the grudge...', 'although some people will disagree...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several errors throughout the essay, including incorrect verb tenses or voices in the opening ('It is being argued that the music unites'), unnecessary articles ('the music'), subject-verb agreement issues ('music hold the power'), and awkward punctuation before conjunctions ('is that, music'). While these errors do not severely impede overall comprehension, their frequency prevents the writing from achieving a higher band. The majority of complex sentences contain minor errors, placing this criterion at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.
