Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a partial agreement stance, discussing both the unifying and divisive aspects of music. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the notion that music brings happiness and reduces stress is reiterated across multiple sentences without being expanded into deeper arguments. The counter-argument regarding language barriers is also underdeveloped, relying on a vague example of going to a concert and failing to understand the music. While a clear position is established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion, the overall depth of support places this response firmly at Band 5.5 to 6.0. Because the ideas remain somewhat superficial and rely on over-generalised assertions, a score of 6.0 is appropriate for addressing the prompt adequately while showing room for deeper elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the benefits of music versus the language barrier drawback. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies heavily on repetitive transitional phrases like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Also sometimes', and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'depend on different region'. Furthermore, the internal logical progression within paragraphs is disrupted by abrupt shifts in ideas, such as jumping from gym motivation to stress relief within the same paragraph. These weaknesses in cohesive devices and logical flow prevent the response from achieving a higher band, aligning well with the Band 5.5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'diversity', 'motivation', and 'stress-free'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation throughout the text. Examples include 'indivuals' (individuals), 'way of enrolling society' (bringing society together), 'overwilling', and 'lives their life' (live their lives). Additionally, spelling and morphological errors occur frequently, such as 'disgaree' and 'leads to provide'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message and does not severely impede communication, the density of lexical errors and lack of precision restrict the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinating clauses with words like 'because', 'although', and 'when'. However, control over grammar and sentence structure is weak, and frequent errors persist. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'music is having several merits' and 'music sometimes used to create'. Punctuation and article usage are also unreliable. Complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to awkward phrasing that can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'if you like music of different region but you don't understand their music language.' Due to the limited range of error-free structures and frequent grammatical lapses, a score of 5.0 is reflective of the student's current control.
