Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing that music brings different cultures and ages together. The main ideas, such as music transcending language barriers and bridging generational gaps, are relevant and supported with general examples like international festivals and traditional family songs. However, the development is somewhat repetitive and lacks deeper extension. For instance, the discussion on how music reduces cultural differences is kept rather brief and relies on simple assertions rather than detailed explanation. While all parts of the task are addressed, the depth of idea development aligns best with the Band 6 descriptor, where relevant ideas are presented but remain slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays an overall logical progression, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing cultural and generational unity respectively, and concluding with a summary. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesive devices and referencing are frequently faulty or mechanical, such as the unusual transitional phrase 'To embark on,' and missing conjunctions in sentences like 'firstly, music can brings people.' Furthermore, repetitive sentence beginnings and mechanical links hinder the flow of ideas. These limitations place the response firmly in the Band 5 category, where organisation is present, but cohesive devices are inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate basic ideas related to the topic, featuring words such as 'international', 'cultural', and 'traditional'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'ear' instead of 'era', 'differnet' instead of 'different', 'cutures', and 'requrie'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are marred by frequent mechanical errors and awkward collocations like 'reached to new height'. Because the lexical range is limited and noticeable errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, the response warrants a Band 5 for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to construct multi-clause sentences. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('music can brings'), missing articles, incorrect prepositions ('reach to new height'), and punctuation lapses. Many attempts at complex sentences result in structural awkwardness and lack of precision. Although the meaning is generally retrievable despite the errors, the frequency and impact of these inaccuracies match the Band 5 descriptors, reflecting a limited range of structures where attempts at complex sentences are often faulty and generate frequent errors.
