IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The question is related to how music brings people together of different ages and culture together and is this a good way. I agree with this opinion because music is a universal language and anyone who dont even speak that language , listens to that music and vibes to it. and people of different nations and of different cultures who have same language like english and hindi (which is spoken in india and in pakistan urdu is spoken but is very similar to hindi).

I live in Pakistan and songs of Indian musicians and Pakistani musicians are listen here and the new generation also listens to English songs. So this a prime example of the opinion mentioned above.

But some people do not agree with this opinion as some musicians and some music kind is against someone's culture like hindu music which is against muslim beliefs and christian beliefs. That's where music does not bring people together. This create differences between the people and hatred develops between them.

I also have an example for this opinion, as when i was in dubai there was a concert of Atif Aslam and the audience which came to attend the concert was not only Pakistanis but Indians , Bangladeshians and other people of different cultures and there were childrens, adults and aged people in the crowd . This shows that music does bring people of different cultures and ages together in a positive and good way. But as quoted in the books there is always a dark side of the picture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that music brings people of different cultures and ages together. The writer attempts to support this with relevant examples, such as mentioning the listening habits in Pakistan and a personal anecdote about an Atif Aslam concert in Dubai. However, the ideas lack full development and depth. For instance, the counterargument regarding certain types of music being against religious or cultural beliefs is introduced but remains underdeveloped and slightly confusing. Furthermore, the reasoning tends to rely on overly simplistic generalisations rather than fully extended arguments. Overall, the response meets the basic requirements of the task but sits comfortably at a Band 5.0 level due to limited idea extension and underdeveloped support.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response attempts to organise information into paragraphs, but the overall logical progression is weak. The transition between ideas feels abrupt, particularly in the shift from discussing language similarities to personal experiences in Pakistan and then to a counterargument. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'and' to join clauses, and conversational transitions like 'That's where music does not bring people together'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks clear thematic unity. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought smoothly. These features reflect the characteristics of Band 5.0, where organisation is present, but clear overall progression is lacking.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on everyday words and phrases such as 'good way', 'different cultures and ages', and 'same language'. There are noticeable limitations in lexical range, and attempts to use less common vocabulary are minimal. Furthermore, there are several word choice and collocation errors, such as 'music kind' instead of 'genre of music', 'Bangladeshians' instead of 'Bangladeshians' or 'Bangladeshi people', and 'aged people' instead of 'elderly people'. Spelling and word formation errors also occur. However, the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the core message without causing severe communication breakdown, placing the response at a Band 5.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. While there are a few attempts at complex sentences, such as 'anyone who dont even speak that language , listens to that music and vibes to it', these attempts are frequently faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('anyone who dont', 'This create differences'), missing articles, awkward phrasing, and incorrect verb tenses. Punctuation is also erratic, with spaces before commas and periods. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures, aligning the grammar with Band 4.5 to 5.0 descriptors; a score of 5.0 is awarded as meaning is generally retrievable.
