IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Music always plays a crucial role in all cultures. Numerous people believe that it can bring individuals from different cultures and age groups together.

As far as I'm concerned, I strongly agree with this point for the reason that music can overcome cultural barriers and create a shared experience between the public of different generations.

One important reason why music connects different cultures is that it does not require a specific language. The public can enjoy its rhythm, song, and melody even if they do not understand its lyrics. International music is becoming more popular owing to social media and streaming platforms. For instance, Korean pop music attracts millions of listeners around the world, including those people who cannot speak Korean. Similarly, Western, indian and Pakistani music is enjoyed by the audience in many different countries.

This shows music can introduce people and encourage them to participate in different traditions.

Music can also connect different generations closer together. Although older adults may have different lifestyles and interests, they can share an interest in a certain song or musical style. For instance, parents may introduce their favorite song to their children, while younger family members may introduce modern music to their parents.

On the other hand, music cannot eliminate every cultural and generational gap .persons amy have different musical preferences and traditional forms.

Nevertheless, music provides a simple and enjoyable way for people to interact and discover similarities with one another.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is an effective way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. By crossing language barriers, introducing individuals to new traditions, and creating shared experiences, music can play a vital role in connecting societies

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both cultural and generational dimensions of music. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Korean pop music and family interactions across generations. The concession paragraph acknowledging counter-arguments further develops the complexity of the response. The position is well-developed, and the arguments flow logically to a clear conclusion. This performance aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured into an introduction, well-defined body paragraphs addressing culture and generation respectively, a counter-argument paragraph, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One important reason', 'Similarly', 'Although', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument, although paragraphing and referencing remain fairly standard rather than sophisticated, which points firmly to a Band 7 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, incorporating terms like 'crucial role', 'overcome cultural barriers', 'shared experience', and 'generational gap'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items with general awareness of style and collocation, though occasional errors or slightly awkward phrasing appear, such as 'the public of different generations' or 'persons amy have'. However, meaning is never obscured, and the lexical range is adequate for a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and subordinate structures, such as in 'The public can enjoy its rhythm, song, and melody even if they do not understand its lyrics.' There are a few mechanical errors present, including minor typos ('amy' instead of 'may') and occasional punctuation slips, but these errors rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are error-free, and complex structures are attempted with reasonable success, matching the Band 6.5 criteria well.
