Student answer (Band 7.0)
Music is widely regarded as a powerful means of connecting people from different backgrounds. It can bring together individuals of different cultures and age groups by creating shared experiences and reducing social and cultural barriers. From my perspective, I strongly agree that music is an effective way of bringing people closer together.
One of the main reasons why music can unite people from different cultures is that it allows them to experience and appreciate unfamiliar traditions. Music can cross language barriers because people can enjoy its rhythm, melody and emotions even when they do not understand the lyrics. International music festivals, for example, provide opportunities for people from various countries to listen to traditional and modern music together. Similarly, people in Pakistan may enjoy Turkish, Indian, Korean or Western music without being familiar with those cultures. In this way, music can encourage cultural understanding and mutual respect.
Music can also bring people of different generations together. Although younger and older people may have different lifestyles and interests, they can often share a common interest in music. For instance, parents may introduce their favourite old songs to their children, while younger family members may introduce modern music to their parents. Family celebrations, weddings and other social events also provide opportunities for several generations to enjoy music together. As a result, music can create shared memories and strengthen relationships between family members.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is an effective means of bringing people from different cultures and age groups together. It can overcome language and cultural barriers, promote mutual understanding and create shared experiences between different generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task prompt, exploring both the cultural and generational aspects of music as a unifying force. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as international music festivals and the author's reference to Pakistani listeners enjoying Turkish or Korean music. The generalisations made are logical and well-reasoned, fitting the requirements for a Band 7.5 to Band 8 performance. The content is directly focused on the question without wandering off-topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from a general introduction to cultural unity in the second paragraph, generational unity in the third, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'Similarly', and 'As a result' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is logical and fully supports the flow of ideas, reflecting the characteristics of a strong Band 7.5 or Band 8 response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally precise range of vocabulary suitable for an academic response. Phrases such as 'social and cultural barriers', 'unfamiliar traditions', and 'mutual respect' show good lexical control. There are also successful attempts at less common vocabulary items, such as 'generations' and 'strengthen relationships'. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated or flashy, it is accurate and allows the writer to convey ideas clearly without major flaws or awkward collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or participial clauses embedded within longer sentences, such as 'Music can cross language barriers because people can enjoy its rhythm...' and 'Although younger and older people may have different lifestyles...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is consistently maintained throughout the text. Punctuation is accurate, and punctuation errors are virtually nonexistent. The command of grammar easily satisfies the criteria for Band 7.5.
