Student answer (Band 7.5)
Music is a universal language that plays a significant role in our daily lives. Many people believe that it has the unique power to bring individuals from different cultures and age groups together. I completely agree with this opinion, as music not only helps to bridge cultural gaps but also creates common ground between different generations.
First of all, music acts as a powerful bridge between different cultures. Even when people do not speak the same language, they can still connect through the shared emotion and rhythm of a song. For example, the widespread popularity of international genres, such as K-pop or Latin pop, shows that listeners can enjoy the energy of a track without understanding the lyrics. When diverse groups of people attend global music festivals, they often experience a deep sense of unity. This shared experience can help to alleviate cultural misunderstandings and foster a sense of global community.
Furthermore, music is equally effective at closing the gap between different age groups. It is common for older and younger generations to have different perspectives on life, which can sometimes make communication difficult. However, music provides an excellent alternative way for them to bond. For instance, parents and children often look forward to attending concerts together or sharing their favorite songs with one another. By appreciating both contemporary hits and classic tracks, families can find common ground, which helps to mitigate generational differences and build stronger relationships.
To sum up, I strongly believe that music is a pivotal tool for uniting people. By breaking down language barriers and providing a shared interest for different age groups, it creates meaningful connections. Ultimately, music celebrates our differences while reminding us of our shared humanity, making it highly beneficial for society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by exploring how music brings people of different cultures and age groups together. The writer presents a clear, well-developed position throughout the essay, stating agreement in the introduction and reinforcing it consistently. Ideas are well extended and supported with relevant examples, such as referencing international genres like K-pop or Latin pop to illustrate cultural connection, and examining how families bond over concerts and shared listening to address generational gaps. The arguments are logical, cohesive, and directly answer the prompt without any wandering or tangents. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 8 descriptor for Task Achievement, as all parts are covered well and ideas are thoroughly developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression from introduction through body paragraphs to a well-structured conclusion. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, with the first body paragraph focusing on culture and the second focusing on age groups. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Referencing and substitution are handled smoothly, as seen when the writer uses 'This shared experience' to link back to the preceding concept of global music festivals. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently throughout the response. The control over cohesion and logical flow aligns well with the Band 8 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Less common lexical items are used with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'universal language', 'bridge cultural gaps', 'common ground', and 'mitigate generational differences'. Word choices are precise, and there are virtually no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is fluent and natural, it occasionally stops short of the fully sophisticated, native-like control required for a Band 8 or 9, maintaining instead a very solid Band 7 level characterized by precision, natural phrasing, and accurate spelling throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay features a wide variety of complex sentence structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The writer successfully employs subordinate clauses, participial phrases, and conditional-like logic, such as in 'Even when people do not speak the same language, they can still connect through the shared emotion...' and 'By appreciating both contemporary hits and classic tracks, families can find common ground...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Grammar and syntax are under very good control, with only occasional minor slips, justifying a strong Band 8 score for grammatical range and accuracy.
