IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Music is often considered a universal language that can connect people from different cultural and age groups. I strongly agree with this view, as music can overcome linguistic and cultural barriers and create shared experiences between people who might otherwise have little in common.
One important reason why music brings different cultures together is that it does not always require a shared language to be appreciated. People can enjoy the rhythm, melody and emotions of songs even when they do not understand the lyrics. International music festivals, for example, attract audiences from many countries, allowing people to experience unfamiliar musical traditions and develop a greater appreciation of other cultures. In addition, modern streaming platforms have made music from different parts of the world easily accessible, meaning that a teenager in Kazakhstan can listen to Korean, American or Latin American music within seconds.
Music can also connect people of different generations. Although musical preferences often vary according to age, certain songs and artists can become shared interests among family members. Parents may introduce their children to music from their youth, while younger people can expose older relatives to contemporary genres. For instance, families may listen to popular songs together during celebrations or road trips, creating shared memories regardless of their age differences.
However, music does not automatically unite everyone. People have different tastes, and some genres may be strongly associated with particular cultures or generations. Nevertheless, even when individuals prefer different types of music, concerts and other musical events can provide opportunities for interaction and cultural exchange.
In conclusion, I believe music is an effective way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together because it can transcend language barriers and create common experiences. While it cannot eliminate every difference between people, its ability to connect individuals through shared emotions and enjoyment makes it a powerful social force.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing how music brings together individuals of different cultures and ages. The writer takes a clear, well-developed position in the introduction ("I strongly agree with this view") and maintains this stance throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as international music festivals, streaming platforms, and generational music sharing within families. The concession paragraph acknowledging that music does not automatically unite everyone adds balance and depth to the argumentation. Overall, the task is answered thoroughly and meets all requirements for a Band 8 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and a smooth progression of ideas throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving logically from cultural bridging to generational connections, followed by a counter-argument and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as "One important reason why", "In addition", and "For instance". Referencing is clear and referencing pronouns are used correctly. Paragraphing is managed skilfully, ensuring the response is easy to follow and cohesive from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The writer uses a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to the academic task. There are successful attempts at less common lexical items and collocations, such as "transcend language barriers", "contemporary genres", and "cultural exchange". Word choice is generally precise, allowing the writer to convey subtle meanings accurately. While there are no major errors in spelling or word formation, the vocabulary is slightly short of the sophisticated, highly natural control required for a Band 8, fitting comfortably within the strong Band 7 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple sentences with complex clauses (e.g., "People can enjoy the rhythm, melody and emotions of songs even when they do not understand the lyrics"). The majority of sentences are error-free, and control of punctuation and tense consistency is strong throughout. Minor slips are very rare, demonstrating a high level of grammatical control that meets the criteria for Band 8.
