Student answer (Band 5.5)

Unanimously, in this period of globalization, many people are concerned about the cultural impact of music in bringing people of different ages and backgrounds together. This has been the prominent topic of discussion amongst people. Well, in my opinion, I strongly agree with this given notion and the supporting toward my view will be discussed in further paragraphs with a suitable conclusion.

Firstly, supporting my agreement to the given statement, I firmly have a belief that music is more than entertainment; it conveys an artists beliefs and culture to a wide audience, revelaing insights to their community and personal life. Additionally, another aspect which propels my view is the age gap which remains insignificant infront of the cultural diversity and heritage of music. For instance, Michael Jackson once planned a tour in Brazil, but the government feared locals would reject the foreign artist. Instead, people of all ages halted their activities, organised the show themselves, and even participated in the performance.

Secondly, another supporting aspect in favour of this statement is, there is no paradox that music can simultaneously appeal to a teenager in India and and elderly person in rural Mexico, creating an immediate bridge of understanding between them. Hence, music is definitely a great way to unite people regardless of culture and age. To exemplify, the profound emotional resonance of a single melody can concurrently captivate anyone.

In conclusion, I pen down highlighting that the aforementioned given pointers heavily support my sense of belief regarding music's importance in creating cultural and generational cohesion which are worthy enough to strongly support my view point.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether music brings people of different cultures and ages together, presenting a clear position agreeing with this view. The main ideas are supported with an example, such as the Michael Jackson concert in Brazil, which helps illustrate how music bridges gaps. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat general and repetitive, particularly in the conclusion and introduction where rehearsed phrases are used instead of deeper analytical exploration. The arguments are relevant, but extending the discussion with more varied examples or exploring counter-arguments would enhance the depth of the task response. Overall, it satisfies the basic requirements of the task adequately, aligning well with the characteristics of a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response using paragraph breaks and transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion'. Progression is generally visible, guiding the reader from the introduction through body paragraphs to the final summary. However, cohesion can feel somewhat mechanical and forced at times, with awkward linking expressions like 'the supporting toward my view will be discussed'. Additionally, referencing and pronoun use occasionally create minor confusion regarding what specific ideas connect to. Paragraphing is used, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be smoother to achieve higher bands. This performance reflects the features of Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'globalization', 'cultural diversity', and 'profound emotional resonance'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'revelaing' instead of revealing, 'artists' instead of artist's, and awkward phrasing such as 'firmly have a belief' and 'infront'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score because precision and natural collocation are lacking. To move beyond Band 6.0, the writer needs to refine word choices and eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure through clauses introduced by relative pronouns and subordinating conjunctions. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as the double conjunction in 'and and elderly person' and run-on or overly verbose phrases in the introduction and conclusion. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the text from reaching a Band 7.0. The majority of sentences are not error-free, placing this writing firmly in the Band 6.0 category for grammatical accuracy and range.
