Student answer (Band 6.0)

Listening to music is a very subjective experience. It varies person to person, how they feel about music. There are different opinion about what people say about music.

For instance, some people believe that listening to music gives them immense pleasure and a sense of belonging. I am one of those people who personally feel like music plays a very important role in our life. If I talk about myself, my day is incomplete when I don't listening to music. I have this habit of listening to songs before going to sleep. To me, it feels like a free therapy. Whenever I am not in a good mood or not having a bad day, I just put on my headsets and listen to my favourite songs.

People think that music connects them to different cultures and age groups from all over the world. I fully agree to this opinion. The reason is that I listen to many arabic, polish and french musicians and they are my absolute favourite. Moreover, music is not restricted to a certain age limit. There is a very popular song "Forever Young" by the group ABBA. It was released in 1982 and recently got viral through instagram and tiktok reels. One day I was listening to it and my father said he knows this song. He told me that it was his favourite song when he was young. So, music do bring different age groups together.

Overall, I would say music has always played an important role in people's life and that too for a good reason.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear position that music successfully bridges cultural and generational divides. The writer develops ideas with relevant personal examples, such as listening to Arabic, Polish, and French musicians, and sharing the song 'Forever Young' by ABBA with their father. While some ideas like the opening paragraphs lean toward generalisation rather than deep academic extension, the core prompt is thoroughly answered and supported. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements. The response meets all basic communicative goals effectively, achieving a solid band 6.0 standard for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, personal perspective, cultural/generational arguments, and conclusion adequately. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'For instance' and 'Moreover' are used, but logical progression between sentences is occasionally disrupted by repetitive phrasing or abrupt shifts, such as 'Whenever I am not in a good mood or not having a bad day...'. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraph boundaries and transitions could be smoother. Overall, the structural progression satisfies the requirements for a band 6.0, as ideas are generally easy to follow despite mechanical cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating terms like 'subjective experience', 'immense pleasure', and 'restricted to a certain age limit'. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'viral through instagram and tiktok reels', though there are some noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'not having a bad day' (intended perhaps as 'having a bad day') and 'music do bring' (grammatical slip). Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary does not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient to allow flexibility and precision in places, but occasional inaccuracies keep the score at a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('music do bring') and tense or infinitive errors ('I don't listening to music'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they rarely impede communication. The range of structures is somewhat limited, and attempts at complex sentences occasionally lead to inaccuracies. Because error-free sentences are not in the majority and slips occur regularly, this performance aligns closely with the band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptors, earning a stable 5.5.
