Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is an often claimed that music is an effective means of bringing people of different cultural backgrounds and age groups together. I strongly agree with this view because music can overcome cultural and linguistic barriers, while also helping people of diferent generations share experiences and understand each other.

On the one hand, music is an efficient ways to connection people of different norms. This is because people can appreciate melodies and emotions even when they do not speak the same language or share the same cultural background. Music often conveys universal feelings such as happiness, sadness, love and hope, which can be understood by people around the world. Furthermore, international festivals and online platforms allow people to experience cultural exchange and mutual understanding. For instance, the South Korean band BTS has attracted millios of fams across Asia, Europe and America, even through many of its international fans do not understand Korean.

On the other hand, music can help to reduce the age gap and bring people of diifferent ages together. This is because family members listen to, sing and dance to music together during celebrations and special occasions. In addition, older people can introduce younger people to traditional songs, while younger generations can share contemporary music with their parents and grandparents. For example, at wedding ceremonies, grandparents, parents and childeren often sing and dance together, creating shared memories and strengthening relationships.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is powerfull means of uniting people of another background and age groups. It can promote cultural understanding by overcoming linguistic and traditional barriers, while also closing communities of different age gap.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the prompt by exploring how music brings people of different cultures and age groups together, presenting a clear position throughout. The introduction outlines your stance, and each body paragraph develops a distinct, relevant argument supported by explanations and examples. For instance, the reference to the South Korean band BTS successfully illustrates cross-cultural connection, while the example of family celebrations supports the point about bridging generational gaps. Ideas are generally well-extended, though some points, such as the brief mention of international festivals, could have been expanded slightly further. Overall, the task is handled thoroughly, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are presented coherently, with appropriate use of paragraphing to separate distinct themes, such as cultural barriers in the second paragraph and generational gaps in the third. Cohesive devices are employed adequately to guide the reader, using markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are minor instances where referencing or transitions feel slightly mechanical, and occasional small errors like 'connection people' affect the smooth flow of sentences. Nevertheless, the overall logical structure remains clear and meets the requirements of a Band 7.0 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and demonstrates an adequate range for discussing social and cultural topics. You attempt less common lexical items such as 'linguistic barriers', 'contemporary music', and 'cultural exchange' with varying degrees of success. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'diferent', 'efficient ways to connection', 'millios of fams', 'even through', 'diifferent', and 'childeren'. Additionally, phrases like 'powerfull means of uniting people of another background' contain minor collocation inaccuracies. These errors prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands, placing this response securely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is used throughout the essay. You demonstrate an ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'This is because people can appreciate melodies and emotions even when they do not speak the same language or share the same cultural background.' There are, however, several grammatical errors and typos that recur, including 'It is an often claimed', 'efficient ways to connection', and 'powerfull means of uniting people of another background and age groups'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptor.
