Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals argue that music is a beneficial way of empowering people of different cultures and ages mutually. In this essay, I will discuss how culture motivates understanding and relationships between people of different ages.

Firstly, music is an effective way of keeping people together because it can overcome language and cultural barriers. People feel the vibe of the song without knowing the lyrics or language. For instance, international music festivals can attract people from different countries, allowing them to increase cultural understanding and learn about their traditions. As a result, music can increase cultural understanding and encourage people to respect traditions that are different from their own.

Secondly, music can bring people of different ages closer by creating shared experiences and interests. Although younger and older people may have different lifestyles and preferences, they can enjoy music together and exchange musical interests. For example, parents can introduce traditional songs from their youth to their children, while young people can share modern music with their parents. This exchange allows family members to understand each other better and strengthens their relationships. Therefore, music can act as a bridge between generations.

In my opinion, I strongly agree that music is an effective way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. This is because music provides a common form of entertainment that does not depend entirely on language or age. It massively depends on the vibes. Moreover, sharing musical experiences can help people understand one another better and develop stronger social relationships.

In conclusion, music can play a significant role in connecting people from different backgrounds and generations. It can reduce cultural differences, encourage mutual understanding, and create shared experiences

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, exploring how music bridges cultural and generational divides. A clear position is stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as international music festivals and family sharing of musical preferences. Although some of the examples are slightly generalised, such as mentioning the "vibes" of a song, the main arguments are well-developed and directly answer the task question. This aligns well with the requirements for Band 7, as the writer presents a clear overview with appropriately developed main points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each body paragraph has a distinct focus indicated by clear discourse markers such as "Firstly" and "Secondly". Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, and the paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion clearly. Referencing is generally clear, although the transition between the conclusion and the body could be slightly smoother. Overall, the structural flow meets the criteria for Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as "overcome language and cultural barriers", "traditional songs", and "intergenerational". However, there are some informal or imprecise choices, such as "feel the vibe of the song" and "It massively depends on the vibes", which lower the academic register. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 based on lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses such as "Although younger and older people may have different lifestyles..." and "parents can introduce traditional songs from their youth to their children". There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the opening sentence "empowering people of different cultures and ages mutually", but these errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar and punctuation is generally good, supporting a Band 6.5 performance.
