IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Music has been a universal language that has been able to unify people of all ages and cultures, despite disparities in society. I completely agree with this statement, as even in times of war and crisis, music has been capable of bypassing bias and hatred and connecting communities around the globe.

The lack of communication between people has always fostered major conflicts. People around the world struggle when it comes to understanding the feelings of someone who may not share the same beliefs or experiences. But music is breaking all of these boundaries by being the creation of one feeling being transferred to another through melody, which does not necessarily require the understanding of the language. There are examples in history when individuals appreciated the works of each other even without words, as can be evident in people's perception of the works of Mozart: even hundreds of years after the death of the composer, people are still using the name Mozart to say that someone is an adept in their field.

Additionally, there are famous cases where people were working together to restore pieces of music. For example, in 2016, a recording of an album was found on the second-hand market. The owner of this recording wanted to find the band that created this recording; however, he was not able to find any information. After his futile efforts, he decided to turn to the internet community to help him. The only piece of information they had was the name of this band - PANCHIKO - and the place where this record was sold. After 4 years of deliberate search and cooperation, users finally found the guitarist of the band and informed him of all the efforts to find the group and their admiration for the uniqueness of the style. The amount of work and passion inspired the former band to reunite and create music again. As for now, PANCHIKO is known worldwide, and they frequently go on tours. This case is the best example of how music can help people to unite.

Whether we are connected through admiration towards music or by collective efforts, these cases serve as an example of the significance of music in communication. Panchiko's discovery was able to merge the collective struggles of different groups for a single goal, whereas the admiration for Mozart can be shared by millions of people in our society, despite cultural and generational differences.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and well-developed position that music bridges cultural and generational divides. The writer introduces the topic effectively in the introduction and sustains this stance throughout. The first body paragraph explores the emotional and universal nature of music, referencing Mozart as a historical example. The second body paragraph presents a detailed contemporary case study regarding the band 'Panchiko'. While this example is slightly niche, it is effectively tied back to the prompt's theme of collective effort and unity. The conclusion neatly summarizes the main points. The ideas are extended and supported, fitting comfortably within the Band 7 descriptor criteria for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving from the general concept of music as a universal language in the introduction, to emotional resonance, followed by a specific anecdote, and finally a cohesive conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Whether we are connected' are used appropriately to link ideas, although some transitions could be smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically, creating a well-structured text that is easy to follow, aligning closely with Band 7 standards.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision. Words and phrases like 'disparities in society', 'bypassing bias and hatred', and 'deliberate search and cooperation' show an ability to use less common items with an awareness of style and collocation. There are occasional slight awkwardnesses or minor inaccuracies, such as 'adept in their field' (usually 'an adept' as a noun is less common, or 'adept at') and 'As for now' instead of 'As of now' or 'Currently'. However, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey precise meanings without impeding communication, representing a solid Band 7 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, showing general control of grammar and punctuation. Examples of successful complex structures include 'People around the world struggle when it comes to understanding the feelings of someone who may not share the same beliefs or experiences.' There are frequent error-free sentences, though a few minor errors persist, such as 'music has been a universal language that has been able to unify' (where tense shifts or aspect choices could be more refined) and 'a recording of an album was found'. Punctuation is generally sound, and errors do not impede comprehension, supporting a Band 7 score.
