Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some individuals believe that music can help bring people of different cultures and ages together. In my opinion, it is true because music is all about tones which make people feel it and helps them relax mentally.
People who say that music helps in bringing individuals of different cultures together are right because a good song can attract any individual irrespective of his culture. Many poeple listen to music just because of its vibe not for its language. A good combination of tones and poetry is what required to produce an attractive song. For example, few years ago, a Pakistani song names Passori was by Coke Studio, which had really great composition and poetry that song not only became famous in Pakistan but it also became famous in India. These both countries are a lot different in their cultures and religous beliefs, but that song brought the people of both countries together by making reels, song covers. So, I believe music is a great way to bring poeple of different cultures together.
Moreover, people who believe that music also brings together people of different ages are true because many youngsters like to listen to old music that elders enjoy. For example, in Pakistan, Qawwali is believed to be one of the great genre of music which is enjoyed by people of all ages due to its composition and poetry. The qawwali legend Nusrat fateh Ali Khan is listened by youngters and elders at family gatherings. As a reason, it is true that music brings people of all ages together.
In conclusion, A good music can bring people together irrespective of their culture and age. I believe, music also brings social change in a society through its poetry.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing how music brings together people of both different cultures and different ages. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of the Pakistani song 'Pasoori' bridging cultural gaps between Pakistan and India, and the traditional genre 'Qawwali' appealing to multiple generations. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or remain slightly underdeveloped, such as the brief conclusion about social change. Overall, the performance aligns well with Band 6.5 to 7 descriptors, and a score of 6.5 is awarded as some ideas could be explored with greater depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as cultural unity in the second paragraph and generational unity in the third. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition words like 'Moreover' and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as starting multiple paragraphs with similar argumentative phrasing ('People who say that...' and 'Moreover, people who believe that...'). Paragraph structures are clear, but transitional flow could be smoother to reach a higher band. Therefore, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'irrespective', 'composition', and 'genre'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'poeple' instead of people, 'religous' instead of religious, 'names Passori was by' instead of named 'Pasoori' by, and 'A good music' instead of Good music. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. The vocabulary demonstrates sufficient flexibility for basic task completion, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with complex structures such as 'People who say that music helps in bringing individuals...'. However, numerous grammatical errors and awkward phrasing are present throughout, such as 'poetry is what required', 'that song not only became famous in Pakistan but it also became famous', and 'As a reason, it is true'. Punctuation and article usage are also occasionally faulty. These errors represent a mix that sits firmly at Band 6, where simple sentences are accurate, but complex structures frequently contain errors.
