Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing how music brings together people of different cultures and ages, clearly stating an agreement position in the introduction. Relevant examples are provided to support the ideas, such as music festivals like Coachella and Sziget, the Wembley Stadium concert record by a Punjabi artist, and traditional Qwali nights or wedding ceremonies featuring artists like Mehdi Hassan and Atif Aslam. While the ideas are generally relevant and supported, some points, particularly in the second paragraph, feel slightly brief and could be extended further. However, a clear position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor. Overall, the task is answered adequately with a recognisable stance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs focusing on culture and age respectively, and a brief conclusion. However, there are notable mechanical issues with paragraphing and spacing, such as missing spaces after punctuation marks ('culture and household. Many', 'generations.I', 'language.i') and run-on phrasing. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'However', and 'Music serves as a bridge', but referencing and logical progression are sometimes hindered by choppy sentence structures and punctuation errors. Paragraphing is attempted but lacks sufficient structural separation for higher bands. Progression is generally logical, leading to a Band 6 evaluation where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items and specific cultural references such as 'transcends the language barrier', 'pop-culture gravity', and 'global stage'. There are, however, several spelling and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'indiviuals', 'bidges', 'emmotions', 'perfrence', and 'melinnials'. Despite these errors, the lexical resource is minimally sufficient to convey meaning without severely impeding communication, fitting comfortably into the Band 6 descriptor where vocabulary is adequate for the task but contains noticeable spelling and precision errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent errors in punctuation and grammar, particularly concerning capitalization ('london', 'wembley stadium', 'gen z`s'), missing spaces after periods, and incorrect apostrophe usage ('gen z`s'). There are also occasional syntactical awkwardness issues, such as 'made a record breaking history of 92,000 people attending the concert'. While complex structures are attempted, frequent punctuation errors and minor grammatical inaccuracies place this submission firmly in the Band 6 category, where errors persist but rarely impede overall communication.
