Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
There is a widely accepted notion that music has the power to bring different cultures and age groups closer to each other through cultural assimilation and commonalities in interests. It can be argued that while music provides common grounds to diverse communities and generations, it also bifurcates many classes due to the variety in this form of art.
The aspect that acts as catalyst to resonance between different groups of society is the universality of music. In every single culture that currently exists or has existed before, music has been a cornerstone of entertainment and expression. Indus valley civilization, for example, also had the traces of musical instruments found during the excavation of ruins. This asserts the importance of music in every era of human civilization, dating back to the prehistoric times as well.
However, the factor that reinforces the generational and cultural gap is the diversity in music. Various genres and styles have stratified the cultues and the age gap is also signified by them. Jazz music, for example, is extremely popular in millennials but does not attract elders and Gen Z. So, when looking through this aperture, it becomes evident that music is not necessarily the best way to bring people closer from every aspect.
In conclusion, while songs are a great way for cultural and social assimilation, but only in certain domains. In my opinion, the classical and cultural music itself can serve as the instrument that promotes acculturation, while the modern forms are not recommonded as they vary a lot in different communities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position on whether music brings diverse cultures and age groups together. The introduction acknowledges both the uniting power of music and its potential to divide. Body paragraph one discusses the universality of music using historical context, such as the Indus Valley civilization, while body paragraph two counters this by noting how different genres like jazz create generational and cultural gaps. The conclusion summarises the arguments effectively. Ideas are well-supported with relevant examples, demonstrating a solid understanding of the prompt requirements and a cohesive argument from start to finish. The response meets the task requirements thoroughly, earning a band score of 7.0 for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction that outlines the writer's stance, followed by well-structured body paragraphs addressing opposing viewpoints, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'However', 'The aspect that acts as catalyst', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is managed effectively, ensuring that ideas flow logically from one to the next. While referencing is generally clear and cohesive links are functional, a few transitions feel slightly mechanical, preventing a higher score. Overall, the text is easy to follow, justifying a band score of 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common and sophisticated lexical items, such as 'cultural assimilation', 'bifurcates', 'catalyst to resonance', and 'acculturation'. There are, however, a few inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'recommonded' instead of 'recommended' and 'cultues' instead of 'cultures'. The collocation 'popular in millennials' would be more natural as 'popular among millennials'. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings and attempts complex concepts, warranting a band score of 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, including conditional and concessive clauses such as 'while songs are a great way for cultural and social assimilation, but only in certain domains.' There are a few grammatical inaccuracies, notably the double-marking of conjunctions in the concluding sentence ('while... but only in') and minor missing articles. However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and complex structures do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally well-controlled. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.0.
