Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many argue that music can cause cultural globalisation and bring different people of various age groups together. I completely agree with this statement because it unites different people belonging to different backgrounds under a single umbrella. It also connects different age brackets as it contains stories.

First and foremost, different people listening to the same genre of music comes under the same category. This is because they have same taste and values that is reflected through music. Music preserves the unique traditions and cultural beliefs of individuals and different people listening to it helps them adopt opposite cultures. As a consequence, it helps to acquire cultural globalisation and assimulation around the world. For instance, nowadays the increasing number of Asian people are listening to western music creating westernisation around the world.

Secondly, it links younger and older generations together through its words and poetry. The primary reason for is that musics and folklores entales stories and history within, which tends to join the youth with their predescendants and vice versa. Older people also tend to enjoy the stories and captivity behind the music, thereby bringing various age brackets together. For example, sufi and qawali in Pakistan brings older and younger generations together because the music contains the stories of their interests.

In conclusion, I totally agree with the stance that music create homogenisation of the communities because it reflects the cultures of individuals from which different people around the world get inspire and adopt. Apart from this, it also brings different age groups together because every music has a story behind it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating their complete agreement that music brings different cultures and ages together. A position is maintained throughout the response. Relevant ideas are presented, such as cultural globalization through shared music tastes and bridging generational gaps through storytelling and folklores. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the explanation of how listening to the same music genre reflects shared values, which is somewhat broad. Examples like Asian people listening to Western music and traditional Sufi/Qawali music in Pakistan are provided to support the main points, showing an understanding of the prompt requirements. Overall, the response meets the criteria for a Band 6.0 due to its relevant ideas and clear stance, though further extension and depth would be required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt: culture in the first body paragraph and age in the second. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'First and foremost', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, some cohesive links and referencing are faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph ('The primary reason for is that musics and folklores entales stories') contains grammatical awkwardness that disrupts smooth progression. Referencing also becomes slightly unclear at times, such as 'different people listening to it helps them adopt opposite cultures', where the referents are blurred. These limitations place the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'cultural globalisation', 'assimulation', 'homogenisation', and 'predescendants'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'assimulation' instead of 'assimilation', 'musics' instead of 'music', 'entales' instead of 'entails', and 'predescendants' instead of 'predecessors' or 'ancestors'. Furthermore, phrases like 'opposite cultures' are inappropriate in this context. While these errors do not severely impede communication because the writer's general meaning remains clear, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies prevents the score from reaching Band 7.0. The vocabulary used is sufficient for the purpose, supporting a Band 6.0 rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in sentence structures. Examples of complex sentences include 'This is because they have same taste and values that is reflected through music.' However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('have same taste'), subject-verb agreement issues ('music create homogenisation', 'sufi and qawali... brings'), and awkward phrasing ('The primary reason for is that'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, as the reader can still follow the intended arguments. The presence of these recurrent errors alongside a functional mix of structures is characteristic of a Band 6.0 performance.
