Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing how music brings people of different cultures and ages together, maintaining a clear position of agreement throughout. The writer attempts to support this viewpoint with general examples, such as local folk music functions and international festivals like Tomorrowland, as well as acknowledging opposing views regarding different musical preferences. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, and the reasoning tends to generalise without deep elaboration. While the main task requirements are met, the depth of exploration aligns best with a Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptor. Due to the under-developed nature of some supporting arguments and repetitive phrasing, a Band 6.0 is appropriate as the writer successfully addresses all parts of the task with a relevant stance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays an overall logical arrangement where the writer's stance is maintained, but cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Paragraphing is attempted, but transitions between sentences and paragraphs are often abrupt or missing, such as jumping from local folk music to international festivals without smooth signposting. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are inadequately applied or overused. For instance, sentences are occasionally strung together with weak punctuation or basic conjunctions, creating choppy progression. Although the progression of ideas is discernible, the lack of sophisticated cohesive devices and occasional confusion in referencing prevent the text from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey basic ideas about music, ages, and gatherings, but it is marred by frequent spelling mistakes and word-choice errors. Examples of issues include 'beccuses', 'orld', 'intrest', 'withe', 'differnet', 'sources' instead of 'source', 'listednd', 'loval', 'musicval', 'found' instead of 'find', 'considerd', 'prefrence', 'tommorowland', 'adukts', 'thierself', 'evebnts', 'meets', 'connectiosn', 'rape' instead of 'rap', 'sapnish', 'peoples' instead of 'people', 'callsify', 'thess', 'levles', 'youngetr', 'genarations', 'similalrly', 'calssical', 'contarst', 'sper', and 'fews'. These numerous mechanical spelling errors and occasional awkward word choices cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score to Band 4.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The essay demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly constructed complex clauses. There are persistent and frequent errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and capitalization (e.g., lowercase 'i', missing apostrophes, run-on sentences like 'music is a great sources of gathering humanbeings together refardless of thier ages and where the comes from'). Errors such as 'their purpose of coming together is music' and 'these sort of gatherings is considerd' highlight a lack of control over pluralisation and verb agreement. Because errors are frequent, distort sentence boundaries, and impede smooth communication, the grammar performance is indicative of Band 4.5.
