Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that music has a positive effect on bringing people together from different cultures and ages, I strongly agree with this idea because music is a global language and it increases our senses of empathy, connectedness through singing and dancing.

On the one hand, the primary reason why I support this view is that music acts as a global language. This is mainly because through music, even they are not in your mothertounge, through the melody and rhythm people could fell in love and have their mood swinging. For example, a song called "Waka Waka" became really popular after a World Cup season, even its a Brazilian song but everyone in the world, despite young or old people they could sing along and dance at any time its being played. As a result, music makes a strong bonding for everyone.

On the other hand, another compelling reason is that music increases our senses of empathy, connection through singing and dancing. In other words, through a song or rhymth, people could understand each other feelings, their emotions. A clear illustration of this is, people often go to concerts, music festivals because it is not only a place for music but is where they could make friends and get to know other people, sharing the same hobbies as well as the same genres of music. Therefore, it is clear that music gives many positive outcomes to every people, does not matter their genders or ages.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that music is one of the best way of connecting people from variety of ages and cultures together because of its diversity and benefits on people mental well-being.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout in agreement with the prompt. The main ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing music as a global language and its role in fostering empathy and connection through shared experiences like concerts. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in places, and some supporting details lack precision, such as the inaccurate description of the song 'Waka Waka' as Brazilian. This sits comfortably at the designated level, where all parts of the task are addressed and a clear stance is maintained, though deeper development and more accurate supporting examples would be needed to reach the next tier.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

There is a clear overall progression throughout the essay, with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs addressing distinct points, and a concluding summary. The writer uses standard cohesive devices to link ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, some of the referencing and mechanical linking is slightly repetitive or faulty, such as 'This is mainly because through music, even they are not in your mothertounge...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas, reflecting the characteristics of this level where a coherent overall arrangement is present alongside some mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'empathy', 'connectedness', and 'well-being'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation that prevent the response from achieving a higher score. Examples include 'mothertounge' (spelling), 'mood swinging' (inappropriate collocation for 'mood swings'), 'rhymth' (spelling), and 'every people' (grammatical collocation error). While communication is not impeded, these frequent lexical slips limit the score to this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement and structural awkwardness in sentences such as 'even its a Brazilian song but everyone in the world, despite young or old people they could sing along' and 'does not matter their genders or ages.' Punctuation and comma splices also persist, such as in the opening sentence. These patterns reflect a limited range of reliable structures and frequent errors characteristic of this band.
