Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many believe that music has a wonderful way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. I completely agree with this view because music can overcome cultural barriers and create a enviornment for sharing experences to different generations.
Firstly, music is an effective way of bringing people from different cultures together. Unlike spoken languages, music can be enjoyed without necessarily understanding the lyrics. People can appreciate the rhythm, melody and emotions of songs from other countries even when they do not speak the language. For example, international music festivals attract people from various parts of the world, where they can listen to different types of music and learn about other cultures. In addition, when people listen to foreign music, they may become interested in the traditions and lifestyles of the country where it originated. As a result, music can reduce cultural differences and encourage people to respect and understand one another.
Secondly, music can bring people of different ages together by creating shared experiences. Although young and older people may have different interests, they can enjoy the same songs, concerts, or musical performances. For instance, parents and their children may listen to popular songs together or attend a concert as a family. Therefore, music can create common interests and strengthen relationships between different generations.
In conclusion, I completely agree that music is an effective way of bringing people from different cultures and age groups together. It can break down cultural barriers and create shared experiences among people of different generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task clearly and maintains a well-developed position throughout. The introduction clearly states your complete agreement with the prompt, and the body paragraphs logically support this stance. Your first body paragraph explores how music transcends language barriers through international festivals and appreciation of rhythm, while the second discusses how shared musical experiences bridge generational gaps within families. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or under-develop certain points, such as the mechanism by which foreign music sparks interest in traditions, which prevents the response from reaching a higher tier. Overall, the main ideas are relevant, well-supported, and directly answer the prompt regarding both cultures and age groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to cultural integration, generational bonding, and a concise conclusion. You make effective use of cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition', and 'As a result'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct arguments cleanly. While cohesion is generally managed well, some transitions and referencing feel slightly standard rather than fully flexible, which keeps the flow at this level. Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate and appropriate for the task, providing sufficient range to discuss cultural and generational connections with some precision. You successfully attempt less common vocabulary items such as 'overcome cultural barriers', 'international music festivals', and 'strengthen relationships'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'enviornment' instead of 'environment' and 'experences' instead of 'experiences'. Additionally, phrasing like 'sharing experences to different generations' contains a slight collocation inaccuracy regarding the preposition 'to'. These minor lexical slips do not impede communication, but eliminating them and incorporating more sophisticated idiomatic language would elevate the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a sound mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional ideas, relative clauses, and participial phrases successfully. For example, sentences such as 'People can appreciate the rhythm, melody and emotions of songs from other countries even when they do not speak the language' show good command of complex structures. There is good control of verb tenses and agreement overall. However, a few minor mechanical and grammatical errors persist, such as article omissions or slight prepositional awkwardness, though they rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the essay would need a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences combined with flawless punctuation.
