IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Music is often considered an effective way of bringing people together, regardless of their cultural background or age. I strongly agree with this view because music can promote cultural understanding and create shared experiences between different generations.
One major reason is that music can help people understand different cultures. Songs and musical performances often reflect the traditions, languages and lifestyles of a particular society. When people listen to music from other countries, they can become more familiar with those cultures and develop greater interest in them. For example, international music festivals allow people from different countries to enjoy performances together and experience different musical traditions. As a result, music can reduce cultural barriers and encourage people to interact with one another.
Another important reason is that music can connect people of different ages. Although younger and older people may have different interests, music can provide a common activity that they can enjoy together. For instance, parents and children may listen to traditional songs at home while also sharing modern music with each other. This gives family members an opportunity to communicate and spend quality time together. Therefore, music can strengthen relationships between different generations.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is an effective way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. It can improve understanding between cultures and provide a common interest that connects people across generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments about culture and age. However, the length requirement is not met, as the text contains 230 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This word count deficit prevents the ideas from being fully extended and keeps the response at the current level, as some points lack further elaboration. For instance, the example regarding international music festivals is briefly stated rather than fully explored with deeper consequences. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to ensure the full word count is achieved and extend each main idea with more comprehensive supporting details and explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with a well-defined introduction that outlines the writer's position, followed by body paragraphs focusing separately on culture and age, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices such as 'One major reason is that', 'For example', and 'Another important reason is that' are used appropriately to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments. Paragraphing is managed effectively. To achieve the highest bands, the cohesive referencing could be made even more seamless and unobtrusive, avoiding formulaic transitional phrases in favour of more sophisticated linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary that is sufficient for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'cultural background', 'traditions', 'cultural barriers', and 'strengthen relationships'. Word choices are generally appropriate and communication is never impeded. There are no notable spelling or word-choice errors, showing a good level of control. However, the vocabulary tends to be somewhat standard rather than sophisticated or flexible. To move to a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items, precise academic collocations, and more idiomatic or nuanced phrasing to express ideas with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response displays a good control of grammar and punctuation, featuring a successful mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer handles complex structures well, such as subordinate clauses ('When people listen to music from other countries, they can become more familiar...') and conditional or participial structures without losing clarity. There are frequent error-free sentences, and control over verb tenses, articles, and prepositions is strong throughout. To attain an even higher level, the writer would need to demonstrate a wider range of more ambitious, highly sophisticated syntactic structures with consistent error-free execution across a longer and more complex text.
