IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some people believe that people from different cultures and ages can be brought together through music. I strongly agree with this view because people travel overseas to attend concerts of their favourite artist and helps people build relationship if they share similar music taste.
One way music brings people together is through music festivals and concerts. Many people travel abroad to attend concert of their favourite artist. This also gives them an opportunity to explore and get to know more about the artist background and culture. For example, in the final tour of a famous music band called Coldplay, people from around the world travelled to their home country to watch them perform for the last time.
Another way music brings people closer is when they enjoy the same genre of music. People who have never met before can quickly find common ground when they discover that they share similar musical preferences. For example, two strangers attending a concert may start a conversation about their favourite artists or songs and gradually develop a friendship through this shared interest. Therefore, music can create opportunities for social interaction and help people form connections with others, even when they have no previous relationship.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is one of the best way to bring people from different background closer to each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that music brings people of different cultures and ages together, supporting it with examples such as Coldplay concerts and shared musical preferences. However, important length requirements are not met, as the response falls short of the two-hundred-and-fifty-word minimum, totaling only two hundred and twenty-three words. Furthermore, while cultural and age elements are mentioned in the introduction, the body paragraphs focus predominantly on international travel and general social interaction between strangers, leaving the age dimension somewhat under-developed. To reach a higher band, the essay would need to fully develop both the cultural and generational aspects across all body paragraphs while securely meeting the required word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently arranged, with each paragraph having a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'One way', 'Another way', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, distinct supporting arguments, and the conclusion cleanly. Referencing is generally clear, as seen in the phrase 'This also gives them an opportunity'. To move beyond this level, cohesive devices could be managed with even greater flexibility and variation rather than relying on standard enumerative transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'common ground', 'musical preferences', and 'social interaction'. There are some word choice and word form errors that occasionally surface, such as the missing plural in 'artist background' instead of 'artists' backgrounds' and the grammatical slip in 'one of the best way' instead of 'ways'. However, these lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication. Spelling and overall word control remain generally sound. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary would need to demonstrate greater precision, flexibility, and a wider control of less common lexical collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional ideas, such as in 'People who have never met before can quickly find common ground when they discover that...'. There are some errors in grammar, including a missing subject verb connection in the introduction ('and helps people build relationship') and a missing plural ('build relationship'). The punctuation and sentence structures remain mostly functional, allowing the meaning to come across clearly. Because it bridges accurate simple structures with emerging complex forms, it shows a solid foundation. To reach the next level, the writing would need a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and tighter control over agreement and article usage.
