Student answer (Band 6.5)

Music is a wonderful art for expressing emotions. Most people believe that music can serve as a bridge to unite people of different cultures & ages together.I agree with the given view, however I hold some reservations.

Undeniably, every type of music is unique to it's own community. Many elder people have a strong dislike for contemporary rap music just as today's generation finds older songs a bit of a bore. Hence, there exists a certain disparity in individuals based on the music genre they are fond of.

In contrast, the effect of music in connecting masses worldwide can be evidently seen from various fandoms of famous artists, that consist of individuals of varying ages, cultures, ethnicities & nationalities. 'Blinks'- a fandom created by fan following of BLACKPINK is a striking example of this. Not only that, but the sense of community that music provides can be observed from the huge crowds at concerts where at a quick glance similarity in outfits, hair or makeup- anything that is a statement piece related to an artist can be seen everwhere in the arena.

Furthermore,a tune is universal. Regardless of the words of the song,a beat gets everyone grooving, as can be seen in case of afrobeats. Also, the lyrics of a Taylor swift song are just as heartily sung by a 19 year old girl as by a middle aged lady if they are into her music.

To recapitulate, not only does music bring people together but also offers them a sense of community while acting as a medium for forming connections. The bridging ability of music in today's world is of great influence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position that agrees with the prompt while acknowledging some initial reservations about generational gaps in musical tastes. The main ideas are generally relevant, but the development is somewhat uneven. For instance, the paragraph discussing how older people dislike contemporary rap music is brief and slightly under-developed compared to the more detailed explanation of global fandoms like 'Blinks'. To reach a higher level, all supporting arguments would need to be extended with equally thorough explanations and examples to ensure a fully rounded discussion throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction, through contrasting body paragraphs, to a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as generational disparities versus global unity. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, seen in minor referencing issues and tight spacing errors between sentences. Cohesive devices like 'Hence', 'In contrast', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader, but transitioning between some points lacks complete fluency. To achieve higher bands, referencing and logical transitions must become more seamless and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common items such as 'disparity', 'fandoms', and 'universal'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and word formation, such as 'elder people' instead of 'older people' and the use of '&' instead of writing out 'and'. Additionally, minor punctuation and spacing errors occur with vocabulary items, such as 'it's own' instead of 'its own' and missing spaces after commas. To elevate this criterion, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items with greater precision in collocation and styling while avoiding basic mechanical slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like subordinate clauses effectively in sentences such as 'Regardless of the words of the song, a beat gets everyone grooving'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing spaces after punctuation marks and occasional awkward phrasing, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To progress to a higher band, the essay would need to feature a wider variety of complex structures with a higher frequency of error-free sentences, alongside more meticulous control over punctuation and spacing.
