Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response sits at this band because it only partially addresses the prompt, presenting a limited position and undeveloped ideas. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 215 words and falls short of the two hundred and fifty-word minimum (with nineteen words copied directly from the task prompt excluded from the count). While the writer manages to state an opinion that music brings people together through personal connection and entertainment, the supporting points remain extremely brief and repetitive. Ideas such as people connecting through personal experiences or older generations listening to music for peace are mentioned without sufficient explanation or specific examples to extend the argument. To reach higher bands, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully met and provide well-developed, fully supported arguments for all parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some basic organization with paragraph breaks used to separate different ideas, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. While the essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, the transitions between sentences feel mechanical and repetitive. Cohesive devices are used rather inadequately or inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of phrases like 'One of the primary reason' and 'The other reason'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the logical flow disjointed in places. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one to create a smooth, progressive argument throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about music, culture, and entertainment. The writer attempts some less common words, but noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and word choice frequently occur, such as writing 'depress situation' instead of 'depressing situation' or 'togehter' instead of 'together'. There are also frequent issues with plurals and word forms, such as 'Some individual' instead of 'Some individuals'. While these lexical shortcomings do not completely block communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve lexical resource and reach higher bands, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to word forms and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Grammatical control is restricted to a very limited range of sentence structures, mostly consisting of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex structures. Frequent errors are present throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'One of the primary reason is'), missing articles (e.g., 'when person listen music'), incorrect prepositions, and persistent punctuation and capitalization oversights (such as starting sentences with lowercase letters or writing 'i am agree'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns, improve grammatical accuracy across verb forms and agreements, and incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures.
