IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
There has always been a debate, whether music has the essence to bridge age and cultural gap. I strongly agree, that music is one of the best ways to connect people across different age groups and cultures.
Good music hold the power to bring people together. Pakistanis and Indians disagree on many things, but come together for music. Musicians from both countries are liked equally across borders. Both countries have banned each others actors but not musicians. For instance, many bollywood films have Pakistani artists singing in them and many Pakistani artists have recreated Indian musical masterpieces. Music is also the best way to understand a culture. Punjabi sufi and pop music has made a special place in people's heart across the globe, leading Americans, Spanish, Italian, Koreans, and people from many other nationalities, to develop interest in punjabi culture and learning the traditions of this specific culture, which resulted in reduced biasness towards Punjabis world wide.
Music does not only bridge cultural gap, but also bring people from different age groups together. Recent internet trend has brought back millennial music and helped teenagers connect with their parents, older siblings, cousins, and even teachers. Music help teenagers and millennials to find common grounds with each other. In addition to bridging age gap, music also helps people understand someone's personality, and their likes and dislikes, which helps in reducing generational gaps indirectly. Modern music also helps millennials to understand current trends and keep up with the youngsters. Music also provides opportunity to millennials and youngsters to collabarate and bring two generations together.
In conclusion, music has bring people from different ages and cultures together.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that music connects people across cultures and age groups, and the conclusion returns to this view. Both parts of the topic are addressed, with relevant examples such as musical exchange between Pakistan and India and the internet trend that has helped teenagers rediscover music enjoyed by older generations. You also explain how music can encourage interest in Punjabi culture. These ideas are extended with reasons, rather than simply listed. To strengthen the response further, develop the age-group example with a specific illustration of how shared listening or collaboration changes relationships; the point about music revealing personality is less fully explained. Some claims, such as music reducing bias worldwide, would also benefit from qualification or more direct support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: the introduction states your view, the first body paragraph focuses on cultural connections, the second turns to age groups, and the conclusion summarises your position. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “In addition to,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the paragraphing supports the two main strands of the task. To make the flow more polished, use transitions that show the relationship between ideas rather than relying mainly on familiar signposts. Within the age paragraph, the points about shared music, understanding personality, and keeping up with trends could be ordered or connected more explicitly. The final sentence is clear but very brief; a fuller synthesis of the two examples would give the ending a stronger sense of completion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “bridge,” “across borders,” “generational gaps,” “collaborate,” and “musical masterpieces.” These choices help communicate the central ideas, and the cultural examples give the response some specificity. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “the essence to bridge,” “come together for music,” and “find common grounds.” Spelling and word-form slips, including “biasness,” “collabarate,” and inconsistent capitalisation of “Punjabi,” also reduce precision. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, “music has the power to bridge cultural divides” is clearer than “music has the essence to bridge age and cultural gap.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast and relative clauses, as in “Pakistanis and Indians disagree on many things, but come together for music” and the sentence beginning “which resulted in reduced biasness.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “Good music hold,” “Music help,” and “music also bring”; the conclusion also needs “has brought,” not “has bring.” Articles and plural forms need attention in phrases such as “bridge age and cultural gap” and “find common grounds.” Commas are sometimes placed awkwardly, including after “debate” and “agree.” Proofread for agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation, while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
