Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the modern day, people embrace music from all over the world, not restricting their taste based on their physical location. Many concede that this helps people from different cultures and age groups to enjoy different music, learn about each other and overall, create a sense of unity. On the other hand some believe that the impact of music in fostering unity is limited and in some cases may also have negative consequences. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that music indeed helps cultivate social cohesion.
A person's taste in music may vary widely from their place of residence. For instance, many Indians are often known to enjoy rap genre, which is not authentic to India. Despite that, one is still able to enjoy rap because of online platforms like Spotify and YouTube. This in turn has influenced music production in India, as we have picked up some of their influences. Similarly, Indian music has also reached other parts of the world, particularly many religious hymns that are authentic to hindu culture. Such exchange in art has inadverently brought people closer to each other. One of the prominent example is the impact of Korean pop music on the music industry. Previously western music largely dominated listening preferences across the world, but in the recent years Korean bands such as BTS and Blackpink have made it to the global stage. This in turn has motivated many listeners to learn Korean, explore its local cuisine and boosted tourism in Korea. Korean economy has also benefitted widely by the k-pop wave.
Nevertheless, there are some downsides to this. We see many youngsters negatively influenced by the impact of music from other parts of the world. One prominent example is the influence of k-pop on Indian teens; many are known to be so heavily engaged that they neglect their studies and other responsiblities and instead engage in online fan wars through comments on various platforms. Fans of different bands fight among each other by even hurling verbal abuses. In some unfortunate cases, rascist remarks are also made. The impact of music alone in bringing together people of different culture and age group is questionable. Korean dramas are popular among young teens, which can be equally attributed for popularizing Korean culture. However, there are only few such occurrences, the overall consequence has largely been positive in bringing people together.
In conclusion, I believe, music has helped kindles interest in different cultures, brought together people from different countries and age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you ultimately agree that music can foster social cohesion, and you support this with relevant examples, especially the global popularity of K-pop and its influence on interest in Korean language and culture. You also consider a counterpoint by describing fan conflicts and the possibility that music alone does not explain cultural interest. This addresses the task, but the discussion is not equally developed: the negative effects are described in detail, while the claim that music brings different age groups together receives little direct support. Some claims, such as the economic benefits to Korea, are asserted rather than explained. Develop the age-group aspect explicitly and connect each example more directly to how music unites people.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on cultural exchange, a counterargument, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the other hand,” “Nevertheless,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument, and the examples generally appear in a logical order. However, the first body paragraph contains several shifts—from Indian listeners to Indian music, then K-pop and tourism—which makes its central point less focused. Some links are also broad: “This in turn” is repeated and does not always identify precisely which preceding idea it refers to. The conclusion is very brief and does not bring together the main reasoning. Group related examples more tightly and use clearer references to strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “social cohesion,” “fostering unity,” “listening preferences,” and “global stage.” These choices help you discuss cultural exchange and the effects of popular music. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, but some expressions are inaccurate or awkward, such as “authentic to India,” “one of the prominent example,” and “has helped kindles interest.” Spelling slips such as “inadverently,” “responsiblities,” and “rascist” also reduce accuracy. A few phrases are vague or overgeneralised, including “many are known to” and “benefitted widely.” Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and word forms; this would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses (“Despite that…”) and a relative clause (“which can be equally attributed…”). Most sentences remain understandable, and the range is appropriate for the task. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “One of the prominent example” needs plural agreement (“examples”), while “music has helped kindles interest” has an incorrect verb form after “helped.” The opening phrase “On the other hand some believe” also needs punctuation after the introductory linker. There are occasional issues with articles and sentence control, particularly in longer sentences that combine several claims. Review agreement, verb patterns, and punctuation, then proofread complex sentences to improve consistency.
