Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed that music is a good way to connect people of different cultures and ages. I agree with this statement because music is something that everyone can relate to.

To begin with, for generations, music has been used to convey inner thoughts. And in the same way, many cultures represent them through their music by telling folk stories and their history. Local music is the essence of the culture and an easy way to introduce it. You can learn a lot about others' culture by just listening to their folk songs. For example, their is a song called "Paar Channa De" it tells the folklore about the love story of two individuals from Punjab. You can understand a great deal about Punjabi culture by just listening to it, even if you dont understand the language, you can read the subtitles.

Furthermore, music doesn't have age restrictions; anyone can listen to every kind of music. The kind of music one listens to can tell about his/her thoughts. So if the elderly start to listen the music that the younger generation likes, it may help them understand their younger ones better and vice versa. For example, if someone is going through some trouble, he/she will most likely to hear sad music; the elders can figure it out without him/her telling them. So the music can also help communicate such feelings that someone might find hard to express themselves.

In conclusion, I believe music is not only a good way but one of the most effective and easy ways to connect people. Because it does not need words to understand or express emotions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction, and you address both cultural and age-related connections. The Punjabi folk-song example gives relevant support to your point that music can introduce listeners to another culture, while the discussion of older and younger people shows how shared listening may improve understanding. These examples make the response more than a list of general claims. However, the age-related idea is less fully developed: the example of elders identifying sadness through music illustrates emotional communication more than how music brings different age groups together. Explain a shared activity or exchange of musical preferences to make that link clearer. The conclusion reinforces your view, though the claim that music is among the “most effective” ways could be qualified or supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow this progression. Within the paragraphs, examples generally follow the claims they support. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening fragment “And in the same way” interrupts the flow, and “So the music” repeats a link word rather mechanically. References such as “them” in “many cultures represent them” are not fully clear. To strengthen cohesion, connect each example explicitly to the main claim and use pronouns only when their reference is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss music, culture, and emotion, including “convey inner thoughts,” “folk stories,” “folklore,” and “express emotions.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the Punjabi example adds specificity. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions that limit flexibility: “connect people” is repeated, “the essence of the culture” is broad, and “listen the music” is an inaccurate collocation. Spelling and informal forms such as “dont” and “their” for “there” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise phrasing and check spelling carefully; varied expressions such as “foster connections” or “bridge generational differences” would suit the argument while avoiding repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures such as “if the elderly start to listen … it may help them” and a relative clause in “a song … it tells the folklore.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation choices are noticeable. “And in the same way” is left as a fragment, while “if someone is going through some trouble, he/she will most likely to hear” has an incorrect verb pattern; use “will most likely listen to.” In “listen the music,” the verb pattern also needs a preposition, and “their” should be “there” in the example introduction. Review sentence boundaries, verb patterns, and punctuation around examples to make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
