IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals beleive that music bridges the gap between people, belonging to different ethnicities and age groups. I partially agree to this statement that music is a source of uniting people coming from different ethnic groups and ages, while in some cases, some genre of music has been accounted for spreading hate towards other cultures.

The most compelling reason put forward by proponents of this argument is that by music people get to know about other cultures and languages. It creates a pleasent environment when people from different locations listen to music of other cultures. In Pakistan, a prominent name Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, who is considered father of qawali genre of music is an example how music can unite the hearts of masses coming from different areas and languages. By his soulful music many people around the globe were introuduced about the country Pakistan and its culture. Therefore, it is undoubtedly true that there are many examples in the world where music is seen connecting people belonging to different cultures.

On the other hand, newer genres of music like rap has been considered for spreading hatred among people of different cultures. Artists around the world humilate other etnic groups and people from different cultures. In some cases, singers have been convicted for serious moral crimes like racism. Thus it is proved that music could also be used to spread negativity around the world.

In Conclusion, music can be used to unite people from different ethnci groups, while in some cases it can also be used to spread negativety.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you partly agree that music unites people, while recognising that it can also promote hostility. You address both cultural and age-related differences, but the supporting discussion focuses almost entirely on cultures; the role of music in bringing different generations together is not illustrated or explained. The Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan example is relevant and helps show how music can introduce audiences to another culture, although the claim that it unites people across languages would benefit from a specific explanation. The opposing point about rap and racism is also relevant, but remains general. Develop each side with a concrete example and explain more directly how it supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from music as a cultural bridge to its possible negative use is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In Conclusion” make the relationship between sections clear. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger control associated with a higher level. However, linking is somewhat formulaic, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the discussion together. Some references are also broad—for example, “this argument” and “it”—so make sure each pronoun clearly points to a specific idea. More varied transitions and clearer links between examples and claims would improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “bridges the gap,” “soulful music,” “ethnic groups” and “spreading negativity.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more specific vocabulary help the response address culture and music. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “beleive,” “pleasent,” “introuduced,” “humilate” and “negativety.” Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise: “accounted for spreading hate” and “father of qawali genre” do not sound natural in context. Aim to use collocations accurately and check spelling carefully; a more precise description of the alleged negative effects would also make the argument more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who is considered…” and a contrast structure in the opening. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical problems are present, however. For example, “I partially agree to this statement” uses an incorrect preposition, while “some genre of music has been accounted for” has an awkward and unclear construction. In “newer genres of music like rap has been considered,” the plural subject does not agree with “has.” Review agreement, articles and sentence construction, and try to maintain accurate control when combining several ideas in one sentence.
