IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In our modren times, music and its genres are very diverse, and each individual prefers a genre over another, which made people argue that these genres have become a linking cord between people of different cultures and ages, brining them together, while others llimit the inpact of music in just an individual scale.
Which one of the points of views is more reasonable?
Personally, i agree with people who argue that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together, and that inpact of music is not limited in an individual scale but it spreads to have an inpact on a global scale. In defense of my opinion, i give the following reasons :
Firstly, ever sense the invention of CDs and the Internet, many cultural musics have spread to different places around the world, such as cultural chinese music and indian, also american country music, all of these genres have been liked by people around the world that share little to no genetic connection to the country or culture of origin of that genre of music.
Second, i give the example of a Jamaican artist named Bob Marley, his music was and still popular in all of the world, and liked by different age groups, i argue that his music connected these different age groups and cultures together, even tho the country of origin of his music is just a small island in the Americas.
Lastly, i give the example of me and my dad, although there is a 40 years age gap between us, me and him always have a good time listening to music in car rides or just at home.
In conclusion, music isn't just melodies and lyrics, it's a connection between diffrent people around the world and it's meant to be shared by them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the start: you agree that music brings people of different cultures and ages together, and the conclusion reinforces this view. You address both groups named in the question, using the spread of music across cultures, Bob Marley’s international audience, and your relationship with your father as relevant support. This meets the task well, and the examples show some development. However, the first two examples are asserted more than explained: clarify how shared listening or appreciation leads to interaction between people, rather than simply showing that music is popular in different places. The opening also introduces an opposing view that is not explored further. More precise explanation of these points would make the response more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a clear opinion, three supporting points, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Second,” and “Lastly” help readers follow the examples, and the final sentence returns to the central idea. However, the organisation is somewhat mechanical because most of the body is presented as a list of examples. The opening asks which view is more reasonable, although the essay does not then compare the views it mentions. Some links between claims and evidence are also abrupt, particularly the move from the global spread of genres to the claim that they bring people together. Develop each body paragraph around one main reason and explain the connection between its example and your argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “genres,” “cultural,” “age gap,” and “connected,” and you attempt more expressive phrases such as “a connection between different people around the world.” This gives you enough range to communicate your main ideas. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions reduce accuracy, including “modren,” “brining,” “inpact,” and “linking cord.” Phrases such as “individual scale” and “genetic connection” do not express the intended ideas naturally in this context. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe music as a “bridge between cultures” and say that it has a “global influence.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including a concession in “although there is a 40 years age gap between us” and a relative clause in “genres that have been liked by people around the world.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “which made people argue” shifts tense awkwardly, “his music was and still popular” is missing a verb form, and “me and my dad” has an unsuitable pronoun form. There are also issues with articles, agreement, and punctuation, such as the comma splice in “his music was and still popular in all of the world, and liked…” Review sentence boundaries and verb patterns, and use a wider range of structures with more consistent control.
