IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals believe that music is an effective way of bringing people of various cultures and ages together. I disagree with this assumption because there are many people who only like the music of their own culture, and as the types of music change over the years, people of different age groups prefer to listen to the music of their generation.
The first reason for the disagreement is that people from various cultures have their own folk songs and music related to their traditions. These people often prefer to listen to music which reminds them of their traditions and beliefs. For example, in a country named India, there are large variety of cultures and languages, and people tend to listen to music and songs in their language which would remind them of their cultural belief and values. There are also social communities and events to promote their culture and traditions to the people of upcoming generations.
The second reason is that due to evolution of music over the several decades, there are differences in the type of music people listen among different age groups. The elderly people prefer to listen to calm and classical music, whereas, young people often vibe on hip-hop and party music. Young people of this generation also face the peer pressure or get influenced by the music taste of celebrities. For example, music taste of elderly people contrasts to that of young people because of their generation gap.
In my conclusion, I disagree that music can be a good symbol to bring people of various cultures and age groups together because every culture has their own music which reminds them of their traditional beliefs and the change in music types over the years can also affect what kind of music people from different generations listen to.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you disagree that music brings people of different cultures and ages together. Both body paragraphs give relevant reasons, and the India example helps illustrate cultural preferences. However, the argument is not fully developed: the claim that people prefer music from their own culture does not explain why music cannot also create shared experiences across cultures. Similarly, the age-group paragraph relies on broad contrasts between elderly listeners and young people, with limited supporting detail. To strengthen the response, acknowledge that music can sometimes unite people, then explain why you believe this effect is limited, using a more specific example to support each point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “The first reason” and “The second reason” make the progression easy to follow, and the contrast between age groups is signalled with “whereas.” This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the clearer progression associated with a stronger performance. However, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and some connections between claims are not fully explained. For example, the sentence about social communities and events promoting traditions feels added rather than clearly tied to the argument. Use more varied transitions and make each example explicitly support the paragraph’s main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “folk songs,” “traditions,” “peer pressure,” “classical music,” and “generation gap.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “a good symbol to bring people” is not a natural way to describe music’s unifying role, and “vibe on hip-hop” is informal for an academic essay. “Cultural belief and values” is also awkwardly phrased. Aim for more precise, consistently formal wording and check whether phrases sound natural in context. This would make your ideas clearer and show more controlled use of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “whereas,” and your meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors persist, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “there are large variety” needs an article before “large variety,” while “every culture has their own music” has a subject–pronoun agreement problem. In “whereas, young people,” the comma after the linking word is unnecessary, and “people listen among different age groups” has an awkward grammatical construction. Review articles, agreement, and punctuation, and revise longer sentences to ensure each clause is connected accurately. More consistent control would strengthen the response.
