IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Many people believe that music can bring people together from various cultures and ages. I completely agree with this view because music in several languages may promote cultural unity among people from different backgrounds and bring them closer.
One major reason for that music may help people bring together is that music can be composed in different languages, which can promote unity and better understanding of culture in people's lives. This is because people from various ethnic groups and backgrounds can enjoy music and develop love for eachother cultures. Music can play a great role in bringing people together because people listen to music everyday, which can develop their interest in another culture. For instance, many people from pakistan follow Indian musicians and listen to their songs, potentially leading to cultural unity and promoting peace among the borders. Therefore, music could be a one way to bring people close from different countries and cultures.
Furthermore, music can be divided according to age groups. This is necessary because music composition according to people's choices might develop ther interest and bring people from different ages together. Traditional music from earlier years might hold people together from the same age group such as older age people people may prefer listening to old music, while younger generation may choose pop-rock music. As a result, music division according to ages is very essential for bringing people together from different cultures and ages.
In conclusion, I largely agree that music can bring people close due to a wide range of music composition in different languages and division according to age groups. This could help people to develop interest and learn about the other cultures through music.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that music can connect people across cultures and ages, and the conclusion restates this view. You also give relevant examples, particularly the reference to Pakistani listeners following Indian musicians. However, the response only partly develops the task. The cultural argument is explained more fully than the age argument, which mainly describes different age groups’ preferences for old music and pop-rock rather than showing how music brings generations together. The claim that music is “divided according to age groups” also does not clearly support your position. To strengthen the response, explain how people of different ages might share or discuss music, and develop each example to show the connection it creates.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of your argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, the move from age-specific preferences to the claim that music brings people together is not fully explained; the example may instead suggest that age groups listen separately. Repetition of “bring people together” and “music” also makes progression less smooth. Use clearer references and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports—for instance, explain how sharing music across generations can create conversation or a common experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “cultural unity,” “ethnic groups,” “traditional music,” and “pop-rock,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some repetition of basic phrases such as “bring people together,” “people,” and “music,” which limits the range and precision of the discussion. A few word choices or combinations are awkward, including “develop love for eachother cultures,” “music division according to ages,” and “bring people close.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “eachother” and “ther” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and vary your phrasing, while keeping the language precise—for example, describe music as “fostering cross-cultural understanding” or “creating shared experiences across generations.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “which,” and “while.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but errors occur often enough to affect fluency and sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “One major reason for that music may help people bring together” has an incorrect clause structure, while “people from various ethnic groups … can enjoy music and develop love” needs more accurate grammatical construction. There are also problems with agreement and sentence formation in “music composition according to people's choices might develop ther interest.” Practise building complex sentences around a clear subject and verb, and check articles, possessives, and agreement. More accurate control of these patterns would make your reasoning easier to follow.
