IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays it is often said that music helps in connecting people with different ages and cultural backgrounds. In this essay, I will explain the reasons behind this belief and will also express my opinion.

Firstly, almost every culture and tradition around the globe has some kind of connectivity with music. They all have different sort of music or sound for different ocassions such as when people are happy they like music with loud volume and relaxing base.

Moreover, in this digital age people around the world are connected to each other and whenever anyone from a random country shares their region's musical art, there is usually appreciation from foreigners.

For instance, India and Pakistan has a long history of wars and hateful remarks about each other since they separated in 1947. But when it comes to music the citizens of each country appreciates and love the music. This reflects how music has connected and engaged people. Furthermore, there are mostly collaboration between both country's music creators to compose music or songs.

Music has also connected people of different ages together and that is usually seen in people with same music taste and preference. Like some individuals love to play piano and this thing connects them with the people who also play or wants to play piano in their lives. This connectedness is without any age restriction.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that music is a good way of bringing people together whether thir culture or age is same or nor.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question by discussing music across cultures and across age groups, and your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion: you strongly agree. The India–Pakistan example is relevant and helps illustrate music’s ability to bridge cultural divisions. However, several points remain general or under-developed: the claim about people sharing music online is not followed by a specific example, and the piano example shows a shared interest more than how music brings different generations together. The response is also 9 words below the 250-word minimum; the 9 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop the age-related point with a concrete example and add explanation to your supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs on cultural and age-related connections, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally understandable, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “For instance” help show relationships between points. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes loose: the discussion moves from global sharing to India and Pakistan without fully explaining the link, while the age paragraph offers only one brief example. Some linking language is repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover” and “Furthermore.” The conclusion restates the position but adds little synthesis. Organise each body paragraph around one clear claim, then explain and illustrate it before moving to the next point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “cultural backgrounds,” “appreciation,” “collaboration,” and “connectedness,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “musical art” and “music taste and preference.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “connect” and “people,” and several choices or collocations sound unnatural, including “different sort of music,” “loud volume and relaxing base,” and “hateful remarks.” Spelling errors such as “ocassions” and “thir” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling; for example, describe musical styles or shared musical experiences rather than relying repeatedly on “connect.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style example beginning “whenever anyone from a random country shares…” and a contrastive sentence about India and Pakistan. The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction are frequent enough to limit control. For example, “India and Pakistan has” should be “India and Pakistan have,” and “the citizens … appreciates and love” should be “citizens … appreciate and love.” In “there are mostly collaboration,” the noun and verb do not agree; use “there is often collaboration” or “there are often collaborations.” The final sentence also has an unclear construction. Review subject–verb agreement and build accurate sentences before adding complexity.
