IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is believe that individuals from different traditions and ages can be brought together through music but I do not think that music is an efficient way. There are numerous way of art that can contribute to bring all people from different cultures in a centre but book is the most efficient strategy for this purpose according to my opinion.
Music is an art that heals us,most commonly a way of recreation, but people of different age groups do not always prefer to listen music because older generation thinks that music is not enough to gain knowledge about different cultures. Books are considered as the best friends of people belong to different age groups. Not only adults but also the senior citizens spend most of their leisure period in reading books to have knowledge about different cultures from different country. For example, there is a tradition in bengali culture known as "Pohela Baishakh" which is explained in a book written by a bengali writer and the book catch attraction of foreigners in a book fair that brings people from different ages together.
Books are the universal art that people from different age can enjoy the similar book because the writer not only concentrates on the specific group of people but also ensures all people can find interest in the story and can gain knowledge beyond cultures and ages. Books may contain history of ancient times and enable the recent generation to have an idea about historic time and relate themselves with their predators.
In conclusion, though music provides a way to bring people together, books are the most effective way to gain proper knowledge about different cultures that bring people from different ages in a group. I disagree with the mentioned statements about music because i think that books are inevitable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you disagree that music is an effective way to unite people and argue that books are better. The examples about older people reading and the Bengali celebration give the response a relevant focus. However, the task asks specifically about music’s ability to bring people of different cultures and ages together, and much of the discussion shifts to the benefits of books rather than explaining when or why music does or does not unite people. The claim that older generations do not prefer music is asserted rather than supported, and the book-fair example does not clearly show how books bring age groups together. Develop the comparison with more balanced reasoning and a specific example of music’s limitations or benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop the case for books, and a conclusion restates your disagreement. Ideas generally follow a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “Not only…but also,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. At times, however, the progression is weakened because the essay moves from music to books without consistently connecting that shift to the question. Some references are also unclear, such as “the book” and “the mentioned statements,” and several sentences contain multiple ideas that would be easier to follow if divided or linked more precisely. Make each paragraph’s main point explicit and use transitions to compare music and books directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “recreation,” “leisure period,” “ancient times,” and “different cultures,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the most effective way” and “gain knowledge.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “There is believe,” “numerous way of art,” “catch attraction,” and “relate themselves with their predators” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Spelling and capitalisation are inconsistent in “bengali” and “i.” Aim for natural collocations and check word forms; for example, use “belief,” “forms of art,” “attracts visitors,” and “predecessors” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a book written by a Bengali writer” and a contrast structure with “though” in the conclusion. These attempts show some range, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms recur. Examples include “There is believe,” “people of different age groups do not always prefer to listen music,” and “people from different age can enjoy the similar book.” There are also problems with articles, plurals, agreement, and punctuation, as in “the book catch attraction” and the missing space after the comma in “heals us,most.” These issues sometimes make the reader pause. Practise accurate article and plural use, verb agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your complex structures.
