IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that music is a nice way of gathering people of different cultures and age groups together. I strongly disagree with this fact because people generally prefer to listen to their own cultural music, and the change in types of music since the past few decades have shifted the music taste of different generations.

The primary reason is that people who are attached strongly to their own culture do not prefer listening to other culture's songs. Every culture has their own traditional music types and there is an emotional value attached to it. People believe that their cultural music which was invented by their ancestors should be played and enjoyed to thank their seniors. For example, many Gujarati people celebrate the Navratri to embrace the culture by dancing and performing on their traditional music. As a result, people belonging to a particular community will follow and embrace their traditional music.

The secondary season why music is not a good way of bringing people of different age groups together is that the types of music introduced to people have changed since the past few years. People of different generations enjoy listening to music of their favourite singer in their times. For example, people in the age group of 40-60 years often listen to calm and composed music, whereas young people aged 15-35 years enjoy hip-hop and fast beats music. This is due to the different types of music introduced to them in their times.

In conclusion, I firmly disagree with the assumption that people of different traditions and ages can be brought together though the medium of music because many culturally attached people would only prefer listening to their own traditional music and not others. It is also due to the fact that various kinds of music were introduced to people of different ages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you disagree that music brings people of different cultures and ages together. You address both groups and give relevant support, including the Navratri example and the contrast between older listeners and young people. This meets the task, but the cultural argument is developed more fully than the age-group argument, which mainly relies on broad claims about preferred genres. The response also treats cultural and generational differences as reasons people will not come together, without considering that shared events or interest in unfamiliar music can bridge those differences. Develop each reason with a more specific explanation or example, and acknowledge the extent to which music may still unite some people.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. Sequencing phrases such as “The primary reason,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. This is a coherent arrangement, and the examples are placed where readers expect them. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated “reason” framing, and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the two arguments together. The reference in “This is due to the different types of music introduced to them in their times” is also vague. Use more varied transitions and make links between claims and examples more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “traditional music,” “generations,” “cultural music,” and “hip-hop,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “emotional value” and “embrace the culture.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “secondary season” appears to be a mistaken choice, “fast beats music” is awkward, and “thank their seniors” does not clearly express the intended idea. “Nice way” is also informal and imprecise for this essay. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check that each expression conveys your intended meaning; for example, describe music as a “means of bringing people together” and refer to “older generations” rather than “seniors.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear reason clause in “This is due to the different types of music introduced to them in their times” and a relative clause in “music which was invented by their ancestors.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Every culture has their own” has a subject–pronoun agreement problem, while “the change in types of music … have shifted” has a mismatch between the singular subject and verb. The phrase “people belonging to a particular community will follow” also shifts into a broad future form without a clear reason. Review agreement, articles, and tense consistency, and proofread longer sentences to improve control while retaining varied structures.
