IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent times, many people believe that music is beneficial in creating harmonic relations among people and will also bring people of several cultures and ages close. I strongly agree with this statement because music creates the sense of attachment and emotions among individuals. It also draws the attention of people with significant age gaps.
Music and food are the two crucial things for every person in today's era. They enhance the sense of closeness among individuals of different cultures and traditions. People feel calm while listening to soothing music, and that's a resemblance in almost every country. For example, people of India and Pakistan start dancing on particular types of songs, which signifies their similarities. Similarly, it also brings emotions among individuals, which encourage them to share their personal problems with the people from other countries.
Music also influences people of different age gaps. It tunes to all types of generations. That's why everyone, whether it's an older one or a younger one, is attracted to it. For example, pop music of the 1960s is still popular and heard in every country. Moreover, many people also use music as a game to entertain themselves, which increases the likelihood of close relations. Therefore, it should be considered important in bringing people together. For instance, Indian people play 'Antakshari,' which is a game played among teenagers to spend time together.
In conclusion, I believe music is helpful in bridging the differences between individuals of distinct cultures and the people with huge age gaps.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that music can connect people across cultures and ages, and the conclusion returns to this view. You address both parts of the question and provide relevant examples, including shared dancing in India and Pakistan and the continued popularity of music from the 1960s. These examples help support your main points. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others. The claim that music encourages people to share personal problems across countries is asserted rather than illustrated, and the Antakshari example is described as a game among teenagers, so it does not clearly demonstrate connection between different age groups. Develop each example to show precisely how music brings people together, and qualify broad claims such as music being important to “every person.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs discuss cultural and age-related connections, and a conclusion summarises your position. Linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “Moreover,” and “Therefore” make the progression easy to follow. This organisation is effective, though some connections are mechanical or not fully logical. For example, “Therefore” introduces a general claim about music’s importance, while the following Antakshari example does not clearly support the preceding point about relations across age groups. The reference in “It tunes to all types of generations” is also unclear, and the paragraph shifts from music’s appeal to a game without explaining the link. Use more precise referencing and make each example’s relationship to its paragraph’s main idea explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “sense of attachment,” “soothing music,” “traditions,” and “bridging the differences.” These choices communicate your main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, which limits the precision of the response: “harmonic relations,” “significant age gaps,” “It tunes to all types of generations,” and “use music as a game” do not express the intended meanings naturally. There is also repetition of broad terms such as “people” and “music.” Aim for accurate collocations and more specific wording—for example, describe music as appealing to different generations or as a shared activity, rather than relying on unclear phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “which,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “People feel calm while listening to soothing music,” but there are also grammatical errors and awkward constructions. In “It also draws the attention of people with significant age gaps,” the structure does not clearly express who is attracted to music. “It tunes to all types of generations” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “whether it’s an older one or a younger one” uses an unclear noun reference. Review sentence construction and pronoun reference, and check that clauses express the intended relationship. Greater accuracy across these structures would make your argument easier to read.
