IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, music is very popular among individuals, it helps to unite people of different religions and age groups. To a larger extent I believe that music is a way to bring people together; however, there are some cases where it is not possible. The reasons for the same are discussed in the following paragraphs.

To begin with music unites people, one of the reasons is that it helps to reduce the cultural differences among people. One can enjoy the melodies and rhythm without knowing the meaning of words. As a result, people can engage themselves in ocaasions and festivals of different cultures. For example, in India where people of different cultures such as hindu, muslim engage themselves in various festivals themselves because of the musical chanting and songs such as qawali, prayer and many more.

To add further, music also connects people of different generations. It creates a shared experience between young and elderly people, regardless of their generation gap. For instance, families can attend various concerts of different people and celebrate the traditional festival together. Besides this, music is a good way to connect with people and bring the sense of belonging. International music festivals and sporting events unite people across a globe at one place.

However, sometimes elderly people feel the recent generation music to be noisy and it feels like noise pollution. This leads to create a generation gap among elder and young generation. Moreover, music cannot eliminate the cultural difference among people. Although, it can unite people, it cannot resolve the deep-rooted cultural prejudices and generational conflicts. To illustrate, people of different culture can enjoy the concerts or songs but can disagree on social issues.

To summarize, music is a way to connect people of different generation and culture by melodies and rhythm but it cannot resolve the generational disputes. On larger extend I agree with the view that music can unite people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree to a large extent that music brings people together, while recognising that it cannot remove every cultural or generational disagreement. You address both cultures and age groups, and examples such as shared festivals and international music events are relevant. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the cultural example involving Indian festivals is difficult to follow, and the point about older people finding modern music noisy is introduced without much explanation of how often or why this limits music’s unifying effect. Develop each example with a clearer link to your argument and explain the extent of your agreement more precisely to make the response more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to two supporting paragraphs, a qualification, and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally have identifiable purposes, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “To add further,” and “However” help readers follow the argument. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. The opening sentence joins two independent ideas with a comma, while “To begin with music unites people, one of the reasons is…” makes the relationship between the claim and explanation awkward. The second supporting paragraph also shifts from family concerts to international events without fully linking them. Use clearer topic sentences and more explicit links between examples and claims; this would make progression feel less mechanical and more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant terms such as “melodies,” “rhythm,” “shared experience,” “sense of belonging,” and “deep-rooted cultural prejudices.” These choices help express both the benefits and limits of music. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which reduces precision: “engage themselves in occasions,” “celebrate the traditional festival together,” and “on larger extend” do not sound natural in context. There are also spelling and capitalisation slips, including “ocaaasions” and “hindu.” Aim for more natural combinations such as “take part in cultural celebrations” and “to a large extent,” and check spelling carefully. This would make your vocabulary more precise while retaining the relevant range you already show.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “although,” “regardless of,” and “because,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “Nowadays, music is very popular among individuals, it helps…” is a comma splice; “This leads to create” uses an incorrect verb pattern; and “people of different generation” needs a plural noun form. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “across a globe” and “To begin with music unites people, one of the reasons is…”. Practise separating independent clauses and checking verb patterns, articles, and singular/plural agreement. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
