IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many individuals believe that music can bring people from different cultural backgrounds and age groups together. I believe music holds the power to unite people, so I agree with those who think that music can bring people together despite their differences.

Music can transcend the language barrier and bring people together. People do not have to understand it to be able to enjoy it; they just need to feel it. For instance, back in the 2010s, the most popular song was "Gangnam Style." Nobody knew what he meant, yet it was a vibe that everyone caught. The music and dance were so contagious that the whole cricketing nation of the West Indies was performing that dance move on that song. The second instance would be the song, "Despacito." It is a Spanish song; many people, including me, didn't understand a single word, yet listened to it more than one can remember, because to us, it was fun to hear it.

On the other hand, music not only brings people together because it transcends the language barrier, but also because people feel relatable. Many people now express their emotions through music. I remember the scene from "Dead Poets Society. "Doctors and engineers are noble professions, but music, poetry, and art are what we stay alive for. Music gives people a way to be expressive. For example, many people would choose a perfect song to upload on a reel to express their current emotions. What can't be told can be expressed through music. People who have gone through a breakup in their life can certainly feel the depth of "The Night We Met." It doesn't matter if they are Hispanic, Asian, Black, or White people; anyone can relate to that song.

However, the people who do disagree might think that the language barrier might not be able to let music unite people, but I believe that true music surpasses any boundaries and barriers because Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan collaborating with Michael Brook would not have been possible if music couldn't break through the language barrier.

In conclusion, music can break through the language barrier, and people who do not understand it can still vibe on it and bring people together. The other thing would be the relatability of music that allows everyone to unite as one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you agree that music can unite people across cultural and age differences. You support this with relevant examples, including “Gangnam Style,” “Despacito,” and the emotional connection listeners may feel with “The Night We Met.” However, the response develops cultural and language differences much more fully than age differences, which are named in the task but not illustrated or explained. Some claims also need clearer reasoning: the examples show songs becoming popular, but you could explain more directly how people of different ages or cultures interact or feel united through them. The counterargument is briefly acknowledged, but its point is not explored before being dismissed. Develop these less-covered aspects to address the task more evenly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two supporting paragraphs, a counterargument, and a conclusion. The progression from music crossing language barriers to emotional relatability is easy to follow, and signposts such as “For instance,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. At times, however, the linking feels mechanical or the relationship between ideas is not fully clear. For example, “On the other hand” introduces another supporting reason rather than a contrasting point, while the counterargument appears in a separate paragraph but is quickly dismissed. The reference to “Dead Poets Society” is also awkwardly joined to the next sentence. Use transitions that reflect the actual relationship between ideas and make references between sentences clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including phrases such as “transcend the language barrier,” “express their emotions,” and “relate to that song.” These choices help communicate your ideas, and the examples make the discussion engaging. There are also attempts at more vivid, informal language, such as “it was a vibe” and “everyone can still vibe on it”; these are understandable but less suitable for a formal academic essay. Some wording is imprecise or repetitive, including repeated uses of “bring people together” and “barrier,” and “the whole cricketing nation” is an unclear description of the West Indies. Aim for more precise, consistently formal phrasing and vary repeated expressions while preserving your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “People do not have to understand it to be able to enjoy it” and the conditional structure “if music couldn't break through the language barrier.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, although some punctuation and sentence-boundary errors remain. In “I remember the scene from ‘Dead Poets Society. ‘Doctors and engineers…,” the quotation marks and punctuation make it difficult to see where the reference ends and the quoted material begins. The sentence beginning “However, the people who do disagree might think…” is also long and would be clearer if divided or punctuated more carefully. Review quotation punctuation and use a wider range of accurately controlled sentence patterns.
