IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people believe that music is a good way of bringing people from different cultural backgrounds and ages together. I slightly disagree with this statement as different cultures have different values and sentiments.
In almost every culture, music has been an integral part of gatherings and events. However, everyone have different songs and music preferences. It is difficult for people to like a specific kind of music. Also, music has been revived almost in every decade and every age group have their personal preferences. For instance, the kind of music my grandfather enjoys and what type of music I like is different. He enjoys sufi music and I prefer rap-style music. Furthermore, in some cultures and religions music is considered haram or not appreciated. One should respect every culture and be considerate of each others values.
There are many other ways of bringing people from different cultural backgrounds together. People of different ages, and cultures can connect with each other through kindness, good food, travel history and many other things. For example, many countries like my country Pakistan promotes their tourism by showing our history, architechture, and beautiful landscapes. Many foreigners from all over the world are visiting our country because of good tourism spots rather than music.
In conclusion, it is true to some extent that music has brought people from different cultures and ages together but it is not the best way to bring different communities together. Every country should preserve their history and share there culture with others and let people from different ethnicity and ages decide if they want to connect.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you slightly disagree, while acknowledging in the conclusion that music can bring people together to some extent. You address both culture and age, and the examples of your grandfather’s sufi preference and your own interest in rap make the age comparison relevant. However, the cultural argument is less fully explained: the point that some religions do not appreciate music is stated but not connected in detail to whether music can unite people. The tourism example supports other ways of connecting cultures, but does not directly show how effective music is by comparison. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation and a specific link back to your degree of agreement. The response meets the stated length requirement; nine words copied from the task prompt were not counted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Examples are generally placed beside the ideas they support, and transitions such as “However,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. At times, though, connections between points are abrupt. The move from differing musical tastes to religious attitudes, for example, would benefit from a sentence explaining how both limit music’s ability to unite everyone. The tourism paragraph also shifts from cultural connection to promoting Pakistan without fully tying that example back to the comparison with music. Use clearer referencing and more explicit links between each example and your main claim; avoid relying mainly on familiar transition phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “cultural backgrounds,” “integral part,” “personal preferences,” “preserve their history,” and “connect with each other.” These choices communicate your ideas, and the response attempts some less common expressions. However, several word choices or collocations are imprecise, such as “music has been revived almost in every decade,” where the intended meaning is unclear, and “good tourism spots,” which sounds informal and vague. There are also spelling errors, including “architechture,” and some repetition of “different,” “music,” and “people.” Choose more precise topic vocabulary, check spelling carefully, and vary repeated terms where this can be done naturally without making the meaning less clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession with “However” and a relative clause in “the kind of music my grandfather enjoys.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “everyone have” should be “everyone has,” and “every age group have” should be “every age group has.” In “the kind of music … and what type of music I like is different,” the compound subject requires a plural verb and the comparison needs a more parallel structure. The final sentence also has agreement and pronoun errors in “Every country should … share there culture.” Review subject–verb agreement, pronoun forms, and sentence construction, then proofread for punctuation and agreement while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
