Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response identifies the topic and makes one relevant comparison, noting that the musicians’ stage has been replaced by an amphitheatre. However, it gives no meaningful account of most of the plan: the central rose garden, café, play area, water feature, retained north-west garden, and underground car-park entrance are omitted. The overview is also vague (“many changes”) and does not summarise the main pattern of redevelopment. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, leaving too little space to select and report the key features. To improve, provide a clear overview and describe several major changes, comparing their locations with the 1920 layout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the maps, followed by an overview beginning with “Overall.” The final clause also gives a specific comparison, so the reader can identify one point of change. However, the response ends abruptly and has no developed body paragraph or progression through the park’s features. The relationship between the general statement and the example is not clearly signposted, and the final sentence lacks closing punctuation. Use a short introduction, a concise overview, and one or two paragraphs grouped by areas or types of change. This would create a clearer sequence and make comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “public park,” “stage for musicians,” and “Amphitheatre for concerts,” which communicate the subject and one change. However, the vocabulary is very limited for describing a map, and “structure” is repeated without conveying specific changes in layout. The phrase “huge changes” is broad and informal, while “comparison of the structure” is an awkward collocation. A wider range of precise location and change language—such as “in the north-east corner,” “was replaced by,” and “remained unchanged”—would help report the plans accurately. Take care to use the map’s labels consistently, including “Grange Park” and “rose garden.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both a simple introductory sentence and a longer sentence beginning “Overall,” but control of verb forms and sentence construction is weak. In “there are many changes take place,” the present-tense auxiliary does not fit with the base verb; use “many changes have taken place” or “many changes took place.” Similarly, “There are huge changes takes place” has an incorrect verb form and agreement. The phrase “between 1920 and nowadays” also needs a more suitable time expression, such as “between 1920 and today.” The final sentence is incomplete in punctuation, ending without a full stop. Practise accurate past-to-present comparisons and complete sentences before attempting more complex structures.
