IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps illustrate the information regarding the major alteration that the Grange park underwent between 1920 to present.

As can be seen in 1920, the fountain was major attraction of the park, which is located in the center of the layout. The pond for water plants and the rose garden was situated in the Northeast end of the park. There were two rose gardens and two entrances in the park. At Southeast end of the park there was a glasshouse.

Moving further, there have been some changes in the park which can be seen now. The stage for musicians, which was located at the West side of the park is now replaced by the amphitheatre for concerts. The seats has been now moved to the four sides of the rose garden. The glasshouse has been knocked down and a water feature is introduced in the Southeast part of the park.

From an overall perspective, it is evident that some additions has been made to the park to make it more attractive for the visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the fountain, the rose gardens, the glasshouse, and the new additions like the amphitheatre. However, the description is somewhat limited. For instance, it fails to mention the retention of the two entrances or the children's play area, which are significant features. The overview is also quite brief and could be more descriptive regarding the overall transformation of the park. While the main trends are identified, the report lacks a more detailed comparison between the two time periods, which is essential for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, moving from the initial state to the current state. There is a clear introduction and a brief overview. Cohesive devices such as 'As can be seen', 'Moving further', and 'From an overall perspective' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more precise. For example, 'the seats has been now moved' lacks a clear antecedent in the previous paragraph. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'major alteration', 'amphitheatre', and 'knocked down' used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'major attraction of the park' (should be 'a major attraction') and 'water plants' (which is slightly imprecise). To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise descriptive language related to map changes, such as 'replaced by', 'transformed into', or 'converted'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, such as 'the seats has been' (should be 'have been') and 'some additions has been made' (should be 'have been'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles, such as 'in the Northeast end' (should be 'in the northeast end'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
