The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagrams illustrates how the grange park, located at arnold avenue, was tranformed from 1920 to today. Overall, it shows that in 1920, the park had natural features like fountain, gardens and pond which was replaced with modern necessities like cafe', concert site and children playing area.
In 1920, the park had one fountain in the middle which appeared right in front of north and east entrances. There were seating areas on all the sides which allowed visitors to sit and relax while seeing the natural beauty of fountain. There was a stage for musicians on west side and water pond on east north side. On the right side of south entrance, there was a glasshouse while on the left side, there was a rose garden. On north entrance, there were rose gardens on both sides.
Today, we can see a lot of changes. The fountain in the middle is replaced with rose garden and there are seats on all the four sides of it. The musicians stage is replaced with amphitheater for concerts and pond is replaced with children's playing area. There is a water feature in place of glasshouse. There is also a cafe next to north entrance. On the east south side, there is an entry for underground car parking.
It can be concluded that in 1920, the people wanted to just sit and relax in the park while today, the people want to come on cars and enjoy the concert, garden and water feature while having a nice coffee.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and today, providing a clear overview and comparing the changes effectively. You covered all key areas, such as the replacement of the fountain and the addition of the cafe and underground parking. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview is more analytical; instead of just listing changes, try to group them by theme (e.g., the shift from natural features to recreational facilities). Your summary is accurate and addresses all parts of the prompt well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each time period, and a concluding summary. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'Today', and 'It can be concluded that' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly repetitive, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the comparison. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'transformed', 'amphitheater', and 'necessities'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'east north side' (should be 'northeast') and 'on cars' (should be 'by car'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise descriptive language—such as 'replaced by', 'converted into', or 'undergone significant development'—would enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('The diagrams illustrates') and missing articles ('in 1920, the park had one fountain'). Punctuation is generally clear, but there are minor issues with apostrophes ('cafe'') and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help you achieve a higher band score.
