Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the park in 1920 and today, identifying key changes such as the replacement of the fountain and the addition of the cafe and car park. However, the report lacks a clear overview of the most significant changes, which is essential for a high band score. The description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a cohesive summary of the transformation. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the two time periods could be more analytical rather than just listing items. To improve, ensure you highlight the most striking differences in an introductory overview paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate (e.g., 'So the park is...', 'Also there is and...'). The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly when moving between the 1920 description and the current layout. Paragraphing is present but the internal flow within paragraphs is weak. To improve, use a wider range of linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in contrast' to connect sentences more naturally and improve the logical flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'back before' instead of 'originally' or 'in the past', and 'seat' instead of 'seating areas'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic descriptors like 'place' or 'side'. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'situated', 'replaced by', 'transformed', or 'adjacent to', and focus on using more accurate collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include missing articles ('the' fountain), incorrect verb tenses ('how it look' instead of 'how it looked'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('there was two entrance'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and incorrect spacing. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors impede the fluency of the writing. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, consistent tense usage for past and present descriptions, and careful proofreading to eliminate minor slips.
