IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The plans compare a public park between when it was first opened in 1920 and now.

Overall, fountain and the glasshouse were fully removed from the park, while certain feature such as a stage is reconstructed. Meanwhile, other structures for instance rose gardens, seats and pond are replaced from 1920 to today.

In 1920, there were two entrances of the park to enter: one was to the Arnold Avenue and other was to the opposite side at the Eldon Street. In the middle of the park, there was a fountain and somewhat left of the middle, there was a stage for musicians. In addition, there were three rose gardens belonging some seats. Two gardens were situated to the corners of the left side of the park, while one was to the right side of the upper-entrance. At the very right side, there was a pond for water plants and a glasshouse including seats.

At present, both entrances and the streets has remained at the same places. However, instead of stage for musicians, there is now an amphitheatre for concerts. At the center of the park, the fountain is totally removed and a rose garden is placed, which is surrounded by the seats. The older rose garden, which was at the right side of the upper entrance is replaced with a cafe. Additionally, a children's play area is placed by eliminating the pond, although a water feature is located to the place where a glasshouse was situated. Another rose garden is remained at the same place, which was to left corner of the upper entrance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and the present day. You provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between the two time periods. The key changes, such as the removal of the fountain and the addition of the amphitheatre, are clearly described. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are precise; for example, you mentioned 'a water feature is located to the place where a glasshouse was situated', but the map shows the water feature is actually where the pond was. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well and provided a logical summary of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a paragraph for the 1920 layout, and a paragraph for the current layout. You use cohesive devices such as 'meanwhile', 'in addition', and 'however' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the progression of information is clear throughout the text. Referencing is generally accurate, helping the reader follow the changes in the park's layout without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'reconstructed', 'amphitheatre', and 'situated'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'belonging some seats' (should be 'accompanied by seats') and 'is remained' (should be 'remains'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to maps and park features. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that verbs are used in the correct voice when describing static features.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The older rose garden, which was at the right side of the upper entrance is replaced with a cafe.' There are some grammatical slips, such as 'both entrances and the streets has remained' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'certain feature such as a stage is reconstructed' (missing article/pluralization). Despite these occasional errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You have demonstrated a good level of control over complex structures, which supports the overall clarity of your report.
