Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams given below illustrates the layout of a public park when it first opened in 1920 and its current design.
Overall, the park has been modernized with several new changes, while some original features, such as the rose garden and entrance have been kept, the stage, glasshouse and pond have been replaced by more attractive areas.
In 1920, park had two main entrances, one from Arnold Avenue and the other from Eldon Avenue. A fountain stood in the center of the park, while stage for the musicians was located on the left side of the fountain. There were four rose gardens in the corners, while seating areas around the park. On the right side there was a pond of water plants in the north-east corner of the park and a glasshouse in the south-east of the park.

In addition, the pond has been replaced by a children's play area and a cafe on the left. Finally, an underground parking has been built with the entrance in the south-east corner of the park.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the park in both 1920 and the present day. The overview provides a clear summary of the major changes, such as modernization and the replacement of specific facilities. You have made relevant comparisons between the two time periods, such as noting the conversion of the stage into an amphitheater. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurately described; for instance, you mentioned the fountain was replaced by a rose garden, but the original plan shows four rose gardens in the corners, which have been retained. Precision in reporting spatial changes is key to achieving a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the past and present respectively. The progression of information is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1920', 'Today', and 'In addition' to link your ideas effectively. However, the use of referencing could be slightly more sophisticated to avoid repetitive sentence structures. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a coherent manner that guides the reader through the changes in the park's layout.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'modernized', 'amphitheater', and 'underground parking'. There is an awareness of style appropriate for a report. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'pond of water plants' (a 'water feature' or 'pond' would be more natural) and 'an underground parking' (which should be 'underground parking' or 'an underground car park'). Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and nouns would help you move into the higher band range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('park had two main entrances' should be 'the park had...') and minor errors in preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on consistent article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement. Most of your sentences are clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate, which helps maintain the flow of the report.
