IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given maps illustrate grange park in 1920 and how it looks today.
Overall, it is clear that the park underwent significant changes. Compared with 1920, it now has many facilities, including a water feature, a new rose garden and an amphitheater for concerts were developed in the park.
The park has two entrance gates: one at the southern end of Eldon street and the other at the northern end of Arnold avenue. Both entrance gates remained in the same place. At the top of the park, the seating areas in the northwest and southwest corners were demolished. The rose garden in the top of the northwest remained stable after redevelopment and the rose garden in the southwest corner was removed. The stage for musicians and the fountain were transformed into an amphitheater for concerts and a rose garden with seating on both sides.
At the top right of the northeast side the pond for water plants was replaced by a children's play area. The rose garden was converted into a cafeteria. The glasshouse in the southwest was replaced by a water feature. In addition, an underground car park entrance was added near the park entrance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps well, identifying key changes such as the addition of the amphitheater, children's play area, and car park. You successfully compared the 1920 layout with the current one. However, there are some inaccuracies in the description of locations; for instance, you mention the rose garden in the northwest remained stable, but the map shows it was replaced by a children's play area. Additionally, the description of the seating areas is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that your spatial references are precise and that you clearly distinguish between what was removed and what was added.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'Compared with', which help the flow. However, the paragraphing could be improved; the second body paragraph is quite dense, and some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but the progression of ideas within the second paragraph is occasionally hindered by the confusing spatial descriptions mentioned earlier. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'underwent significant changes', 'demolished', 'transformed', and 'redevelopment'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'in the top of the northwest' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'pond for water plants' (which could be more concisely described as a 'water feature' or 'pond'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and spatial prepositions would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'an amphitheater for concerts were developed' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'in the top of the park' (preposition error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You have attempted some complex structures, but they are not always error-free. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more accurate use of prepositions when describing locations will help improve your accuracy and overall control of the language.
