IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps illustrate grange park in 1920 and how it looks today.

Overall, it is clear that the park underwent significant changes. Compared with 1920, it now has many facilities, including a water feature, a new rose garden and an amphitheater for concerts were developed in the park.

The park has two entrance gates: one at the southern end of Eldon street and the other at the northern end of Arnold avenue. Both entrance gates remained in the same place. At the top of the park, the seating areas in the northwest and southwest corners were demolished. The rose garden in the top of the northwest remained stable after redevelopment and the rose garden in the southwest corner was removed. The stage for musicians and the fountain were transformed into an amphitheater for concerts and a rose garden with seating on both sides.

At the top right of the northeast side the pond for water plants was replaced by a children's play area. The rose garden was converted into a cafeteria. The glasshouse in the southwest was replaced by a water feature. In addition, an underground car park entrance was added near the park entrance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps well, identifying key changes such as the addition of the amphitheater, the children's play area, and the car park. You successfully contrast the 1920 layout with the current one. However, there are some inaccuracies in your description of the locations. For instance, you mention the rose garden in the northwest remained stable, while the map indicates it was replaced by a cafeteria. Additionally, the description of the seating areas being demolished is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that your spatial descriptions are precise and accurately reflect the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition' and 'Compared with', to link ideas. However, the progression of information within the body paragraphs is occasionally disjointed. For example, the transition between describing the entrance gates and the seating areas feels abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the paragraphing could be improved by grouping features more thematically (e.g., facilities vs. infrastructure) rather than just by location, which would enhance the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'transformed', and 'demolished' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'at the top of the park' or 'at the top right of the northeast side', which are slightly imprecise. While you attempt to use specific terminology, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'changed' or 'added' and ensure that your descriptions of location are more sophisticated and varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'an amphitheater for concerts were developed', where the subject-verb agreement is incorrect. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'the rose garden in the top of the northwest'. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally easy to follow, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would help elevate your score.
